Rowayton CT: Connecticut's Best Cities For Your Home And Family ...

Located on the beautiful Long Island Sound 45 miles east from New York City, Rowayton is a seaside community and part of Norwalk, Connecticut. The combination of Rowayton?s water front New England village atmosphere with it coves and inlets, together with its close proximity to major metropolitan centers makes Rowayton one of Connecticut?s best cities for your home and family.

The scenic Rowayton coastline has inspired artists for generations. John Fredrick Kensett, a famous nineteenth century landscape painter of the Hudson School painted this coastline often in his later years and artists today continue Kensett?s tradition.

Rowayaton is one of the wealthiest parts of Norwalk and has a very active artists community, many of them connected with the Rowayton Arts Center. Rowyaton plays host annually to a Shakespearean production in Pinkney Park from Shakespeare on the Sound.

Surrounded by water on three sides, the Long Island Sound coastline has a number of beaches including Bayley Beach, Roton Point, and the coastal refuge of the Wee Burn Country Club. These three properties all share a common history.

In the early 20th century, all three comprised the Roton Point Amusement Park. Visitors from New York City landed by boat at Sunset Rock. A trolley ran from both Norwalk and Darien coming to the Park via Highland Avenue traveling over the present-day Langdon Preserve.

Things to see at the Amusement Park included the bath house, and rides like the classic carousel, the airplane ride and beach-view roller coasters. Famous musicians like Benny Goodman, Rudy Valley and Glenn Miller performed at the park.

World War Two and the Great Hurricane of 1938 brought an end to the amusement park. However, the properties are still one of the most popular parts of town throughout the summer. Bayley Beach was acquired as town property, and hosts concerts and annual fireworks displays each 4th of July.

Swimmers have been competing each year in a one-mile race from the Greens Ledge Lighthouse to Bayley Beach in Rowayton since 1935. This race is known today as the Arthur J. Ladrigan Swim Race who was a longtime Rowayton resident and lifeguard. In addition to the Ladrigan race, other races are held on the same day including a quarter-mile race and several children?s competitions in shallower water.

Rowayton?s quaint New England village atmosphere surrounded by boats and inlets on three sides, together with it close proximity to major metropolitan areas makes Rowayton one of Connecticut?s best cities for your home and family.
