A yoga teacher educates their students about the mind-body-spirit connection; and teaches them to relax and stretch so that they can do yoga poses which help them to lead a healthier and more balanced lifestyle; physically, mentally and spiritually.

Qualifications: There are several yoga institutes in India and other countries, such as the Ashtanga Institute at Mysore, Parmarth Niketan at Rishikesh, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram at Chennai, Bihar School of Yoga at Munger, Sivananda Vedanta Centre at Trivandram, and the Yoga Institute at Santacruz in Mumbai. Specialised courses for Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Power Yoga etc. are also available at various locations.

Job Description: Yoga is the ancient Indian practice of physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. It aims at the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility while meditating; but is widely used as a means to attain health and fitness in the modern context. The word yoga means union, and practicing yoga aims to create a union between mind and body. As a yoga instructor, you will lead your students through postures or asanas that will help them improve flexibility, strength and balance in their bodies. You will also guide them through a variety of breathing exercises including pranayama, to help them de-stress and balance their blood pressure, among other things. You will provide hands-on direction to make sure students are performing movements properly and applying the breathing techniques. In addition, you will offer dietary advice , encouraging them to follow a satvik diet. You may work in a class or in a one-on-one setting.

Skills:?Extensive knowledge and experience: You need to have practiced yoga for years before you even apply to qualify as a yoga instructor. You need to be an expert practitioner in yoga, and need to be in great shape yourself.

Interpersonal and communication skills: You need to have a good rapport with your students, and keep in mind their age as well as health issues before you recommend asanas for them. Also, while performing a particular asana, you need to ask students to exercise caution, or push them to do better, depending on the needs and limitations of each student. Ultimately, yoga gurus lead society towards a healthier, more balanced lifestyle that counters the ill-effects of a sedentary and stressful routine.
