Tech's biggest misfires of 2011

The past 12 months have been a boon of technological innovation, particularly in the world of mobile devices, where top companies have been waging an arms race for the top of the smartphone and tablet hills. Not everything has been smooth sailing, however -- 2011 has also been dotted by delays, false starts, security breeches and straight up technological turf outs. Check out some of the lowlights from the year that was after the break.

1st US museum dedicated to Greek culture opens

Dolls a Greek woman made during World War II. Ice cream bowls and wooden spoons from a 1940s Greek candy store. Thousands of record albums filled with Greek music.

These items and many other beloved objects and family heirlooms have found their way from around the country to the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago, which has a new place to store and exhibit them all, in a four-story 40,000-square-foot environmentally friendly building of limestone and glass that opened in early December.

The $20 million project in the city's Greektown neighborhood, which includes temporary and permanent exhibition space, classrooms, oral history archives, a library and roof patio overlooking downtown, replaces the museum's previous space a few blocks away on one floor of a four-story building.

"This museum became by default the repository for artifacts from the Greek American experience because there was no other place people felt secure donating their items," said Stephanie Vlahakis, the museum's executive director.

Outside the museum, the street bustles with diners at Greek restaurants like The Parthenon, Athena or Santorini. A group of men speak Greek during an animated game of backgammon at the Panhellenic Pastry Shop with mounds of powdered sugar almond cookies and baklava piled in the glass cases behind the counter.

"We are telling the story of Greek America," Vlahakis said. "We just start from the beginning, from ancient times and bring it to the modern times."

The museum is a work in progress, with a skeleton version of the permanent exhibit on the second floor. Curators have scribbled design concepts in colored marker on the walls, like "absolutely want mosaic work" or "look into etching on glass?" The hope is to raise enough money to fill the displays out in a year.

But there is still plenty to see: shelves filled with items from a Greek family in New York, a wall of black and white pictures that chronicles the story of Greek immigrants in America and an area to learn the Greek alphabet. Visitors can watch a short introductory video narrated by, who else, George Stephanopoulos.

Museum curator Bethany Fleming hopes to travel to Greece and make casts of columns, gates and parts of temples to bring back to Chicago.

Downstairs the temporary exhibit space is home to "Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece," an exhibit on loan from the Children's Museum of Manhattan until August. It's a child's view of the daily life of ancient Greece and its legends and heroes, like Aristotle, Odysseus and Cyclops.

"What we want to do with all our exhibits is create a place where all generations of visitors can connect," Fleming said.

There's a kid-sized recreated Greek temple, and children can dress up in togas in front of a mirror or crawl into a jungle-gym Trojan horse. Interspersed are nearly three dozen Greek artifacts, including coins, pottery and figurines. One Macedonian drachma coin dates to 336-323 B.C. and is about the size of a dime.

The museum building itself is inspired by nature, containing elements of earth, air, fire and water. Inside a large, sky-lit stairway leads visitors from east to west, symbolizing the travel of Greek immigrants from Europe to America. Everything, Vlahakis says, was done deliberately to parallel the Greek American experience.

"So much of our world is inspired by the ancient," she said.

Oil eases after Iran threat, Italy gets debt boost (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Crude prices broke a six-day rally on Wednesday after Iran's threat to stop the flow of oil from the Gulf was written off as no more than rhetoric, while a strong short-term Italian debt sale eased stress in European markets.

Tehran said on Tuesday it would stop oil transiting through the Strait of Hormuz if sanctions were imposed on its crude oil exports because of its nuclear ambitions. Washington said it saw "an element of bluster" in the threat.

Brent fell 0.9 percent to $108.28 a barrel by 1150 GMT after climbing more than a dollar in the previous session. Prices have surged over 5 percent since December 16.

European shares reversed early losses to add 0.5 percent (.FTEU3), while Asian stocks slipped, leaving the MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) flat on the day. Futures pointed to a slightly lower open on Wall Street.(.N)

"The threat by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz supported the oil market yesterday, but the effect is fading today as it will probably be empty threats as they cannot stop the flow for a longer period due to the amount of U.S. hardware in the area," said Thorbjoern bak Jensen, oil analyst with Global Risk Management.

It has been an ugly year for equities outside the United States.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) fell 0.7 percent, keeping it on course for a 2011 loss of 18 percent, underperforming a 12 percent decline in European shares (.FTEU3) and a 9 percent drop in world stocks.

Japan's Nikkei stock average (.N225) ended down 0.2 percent, on track for a 17.6 percent drop this year. (.T)

Naohiro Niimura, a partner at research and consulting firm Market Risk Advisory Co, said the chances of a violent confrontation with Iran were remote for now but added the tensions would be a major source of volatility in 2012 along with the unresolved euro zone debt crisis.

EURO CURBED

The euro held above an 11-month low against the dollar after Italian short-term debt costs halved at auction, helped by a new government austerity package and cheap liquidity from the European Central Bank.

The country faces the more difficult task of selling long-term debt on Thursday where there will be a greater reliance on international investors to buy 8.5 billion euros of debt with maturities of up to 10 years.

Analysts said market tensions could easily reignite. Italy faces almost 150 billion euros of debt refinancing in February-April alone.

"Tomorrow's auction is more important and will give more insight into general sentiment. Today was a warm-up," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon.

The euro was last marginally higher on the day at $1.3071.

Safe-haven German Bund futures were barely changed while yields on Italian 10-year bonds dropped to 6.8 percent, just below the 7 percent rate that is widely seen as unsustainable in the long term for the country's finances.

Banks deposited a record 452 billion euros ($538 billion) at the European Central Bank overnight, giving no sign that interbank lending is reviving, although the nearly half a trillion euros of 3-year liquidity handed out by the ECB last week pushed bank-to-bank lending rates lower.

In the United States, data suggested the economy was on track for a moderate recovery, with improving labor market conditions lifting U.S. consumer confidence to an eight-month high in December although U.S. single-family home prices fell more than expected in October.

Wall Street ended flat on Tuesday following a five percent rally last week which pushed the S&P 500 into positive territory for the year.

Gold edged lower, tracking falls in industrial metals and equities.

The 19-commodity Reuters-Jefferies CRB index (.CRB) -- largely influenced by U.S. crude oil -- is set for a 7 percent drop in 2011, faring slightly better than equities.

U.S. crude oil has been among the best performers this year with a 10 percent increase, while gold has gained 12 percent as a loss of confidence in the euro zone accelerated investor flight to bullion.

Samsung Wont Offer Andoid OS to Galaxy S Smartphone Users

By: Vincent Chang |

?Samsung has announced that it wont be able to offer an OS upgrade to Android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for owners of the older Galaxy S smartphone due to a lack of RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other "experience-enhancing" software.

The Galaxy S smartphone sold over 10 million units, leaving a large customer base without an upgrade path. The same problem also applies to owners of the Galazy Tab 7-inch tablet, the Verge website reported.

The Samsung Nexus S smartphone is receiving the OS upgrade, despite coming with a similar hardware profile as the Galaxy S. However, the Nexus S is a pure-Android phone and lacks the "enhancements" offered by Samsung with the Galaxy range.

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

Johnny is fitted with a satellite tag that will help researchers keep an eye on his next amazing journey. Mote has tracked more than 120 sea turtles since 2005, according to Tony Tucker, the head of the laboratory's Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program.

Islamists kill dozens in Nigeria Christmas bombs (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.

A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.

Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.

Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.

"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE

Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.

Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, centre and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.

At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.

"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) for ever. It will end one day."

The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

Foggy windows blamed for two-car crash in Esquimalt

A motorist learned an expensive lesson after he allegedly ran a red light and crashed into another car at an Esquimalt intersection Wednesday night.

Victoria police say the driver didn't take time to defog the windows of his vehicle and allegedly ran a red light at the corner of Esquimalt Road and Lampson Street at 9:24 p.m.. It collided with a second vehicle that had just entered the intersection after the traffic light changed to green.

"The investigation determined that the second vehicle had run the red light on Esquimalt Road," Victoria police Deputy Chief John Ducker wrote on the department's operations blog. "This occurred in part because the windshield of the second? vehicle was ?fogged up, obscuring the driver?s view of the lights and the road ahead."

The motorist with the foggy windows was slapped with a ticket for running a red light. Police say alcohol was not a factor. Only minor injuries were reported.

Obama's Stealth Betrayal of Israel?

On December 8, 2011, Iran displayed to the world what they claimed was an American RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone captured by Iranian forces.? The story of how it was captured, as told by Iran, seems fanciful.? The story told by U.S. officials is not much better.? Questions about the loss are many.? How could this happen?? Was it equipment failure?? Operator error?? Old-fashioned incompetence?? Did Obama wimp out, or was it a purposeful surrender of advanced U.S. technology and intelligence data?

Iran claims that it hijacked the drone by confusing its GPS coordinates and instructing it to land safely inside Iranian territory.? UAVs like the RQ-170 Sentinel are constructed with classified materials and covered with advanced stealth coatings.? The B-2 Bomber has a 172-foot wingspan and a radar cross-section about the size of a dragonfly or hummingbird.? The Sentinel is estimated to be less than half the size of the B-2.? Finding it -- much less controlling its encrypted GPS systems -- would be an ambitious task for any hi-tech nation.? Much less Iran.?

Yet Iran does have it -- and all the secrets it contains.? Most likely, targeting data and reconnaissance intel regarding Iran's nuclear and military facilities.? Information desperately needed by Israel.? And information that the Iranians now have.

President Barack Obama was presented with three options to make sure that the Sentinel did not fall into Iranian hands.? Strangely, he rejected all three.?

So says former Secretary of Defense and Vice President Dick Cheney.? According to Cheney, Obama could have ordered an air strike on the drone or had it recovered/destroyed by ground forces.? What Cheney didn't say is that U.S. drones, like many classified military systems, contain self-destruct mechanisms that can be remotely activated.? Obama's decision?? Do nothing. ???

It's no secret that Barack Obama is, at best, a reluctant ally of Israel.? His personal animosity toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is well-known and was famously observed, both in a weird presidential photo op and, most recently, in a hot mic incident with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.? Obama's policies and behavior toward Israel have raised concern in the Jewish community, prompting Obama to shore up the Jewish vote by pledging continued U.S. support for Israel.? According to Obama, "[n]o U.S. administration has done more in support of Israel's security than ours. ?None. ?Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. ?It is a fact[.]"?

But the record is clear.? The world has watched as the "Arab Spring" has erupted throughout North Africa and the Middle East.? Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Turkey are all seeing the rise and influence of Islamist movements.? The Obama administration supports these as democratic uprisings.? In truth, we are witnessing the rise of tyranny by popular vote.? Sharia law.? Theocratic rule under the unforgiving hand of Muslim fundamentalists.? As political Islam marches on, Israel is becoming increasingly isolated.? And vulnerable.

Iran's leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, vows to wipe Israel off the map.? He denies the Holocaust.? And is a fervent believer in the Muslim end-times prophecy of the 12th Imam.? The Islamic messiah who will usher in a new era of worldwide Muslim rule.? Ahmadinejad believes that global chaos will hasten the coming of the Imam.? So Iran has no incentive for peace.? No inclination to recognize Israel.? On the contrary, Iran believes that it has a religious duty to wage war against the Great Satan (the U.S.) and the Little Satan (Israel).? Whether that comes as a ballistic missile fired at Tel Aviv, an electromagnetic pulse weapon that destroys U.S. infrastructure, terrorists armed with dirty bombs, or detonation of a 25-megaton city-killer in NY, LA, or Chicago.? Once acquired, Iran will use its nuclear weapon(s).

The world cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.? With its very existence threatened and no viable diplomatic course of action, it appears that Israel will have to act to destroy Iran's nuclear capability.? To do so, Israel needs logistical and intelligence support from the U.S. and permission to cross Iraqi airspace.?

Barack Obama, with declining poll numbers and facing a tough re-election fight in 2012, cannot afford to lose Jewish voters.? Americans overwhelmingly stand with the nation of Israel.? Obama has to be seen supporting the Jewish state, at least on the surface.

Stories have leaked through British government officials that Israel may attack Iran as early as Christmas.? The U.S. may provide logistical support.? As of December 7, the USS John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group has joined the U.S. Fifth Fleet in theatre along with the amphibious assault ship Bataan.? In Iraq, the last American troops have left the country, leaving Iraqi airspace open to Israel's jets.? It appears that the U.S. is indeed standing with Israel.? But the loss of the Sentinel drone raises some very disturbing questions.

Why did Barack Obama make no attempts to destroy or recover the U.S. drone?? The loss of intelligence alone is considered huge.? But the technology contained in the drone is also used in America's most advanced fighters.? The F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.? Surely, Russia and China will get a good look at the Sentinel, courtesy of Iran.?

Why would Obama not do everything possible to protect that technology?? Wouldn't Presidents Reagan, Bush #41, Clinton, or Bush #43 have done so?? Reports say that Obama was worried that destruction or recovery of the drone would be seen as an act of war.? Iran already sees the mere use of the drone as an act of war.? Is Obama that incompetent?? Or is it something worse?

It leaves one unthinkable question that must be asked.? Did Barack Obama, commander in chief, purposefully allow the Sentinel drone to be captured by Iran?? If so, why?

If reports are correct, the Iranians now possess critical intel that Israel would use in any attack.? This could create enormous problems for Israel, increasing the chance for unacceptable losses or, even worse, a failed attack. ?

Israel is rightly concerned about Iran.? But, they are also concerned about Barack Obama and the lack of support within the U.S. administration for an airstrike on Iran's nuclear facilities.? Would Obama go so far as to sacrifice secret U.S. technology in order to betray the nation of Israel and thwart an Israeli attack???

There are approximately 125,000,000 Evangelical Christians living in the United States today.? Bible-believers.? And staunch supporters of Israel.? They know their Bibles.? And the promise that God made to Abram, later called Abraham, father of Israel.?

Now the LORD said to Abram,

"Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you; And I will make you a great nation and I will bless you and make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."? (Genesis 12: 1-3 NASB)

Many Christians and Jews believe these words.? And believe them to come directly from the heart and mind of God.

If Barack Obama has betrayed Israel, it could mean something much more challenging than a simple election-year political issue.?

If the Bible is true, Obama may be taking on someone far greater than Benjamin Netanyahu.?

And far less tolerant.?

'Alien' eggs benefit mockingbirds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Mockingbirds rarely remove the 'alien' eggs parasitic cowbirds lay in their nests because keeping them dilutes the risk of their own eggs being attacked.

The study, by Oxford University and Argentinean scientists, examined the behaviour of the chalk-browed mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) which is parasitized by the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) in Argentina.

A report of the research is published in this week's Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Shiny cowbirds regularly visit mockingbird nests and attack and puncture any eggs they find there -- damaged eggs are later removed by the mockingbird host. During these visits cowbirds will often lay their own eggs in the nest for mockingbirds to hatch and bring up alongside their own chicks.

Whilst mockingbirds will mob an attacking cowbird, once an alien egg has been laid in their nest they will usually accept it -- even though it looks very different from their own eggs.

The researchers recorded video of 130 cowbird visits to see what happened to the eggs in mockingbird nests over three breeding seasons. They experimentally manipulated clutch compositions to compare host egg survival in clutches with different numbers of cowbird eggs. They found that mockingbird eggs were more likely to survive a puncture attack when more cowbird eggs were present in the nest.

Computer simulations showed that this is likely to be a widespread phenomenon, and that, paradoxically, the greater the local density of parasites, the stronger the benefit hosts get from the presence of parasite eggs.

'It seems that the advantage mockingbirds gain from leaving these alien eggs in their nests is that they attract some of the destructive behaviour in later cowbird visits, and this benefit outweighs the cost of later having to rear the cowbird nestlings,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'This is likely to be because, unlike other parasitic birds such as the cuckoo, mockingbird chicks do well in competition with their parasitic nest-mates -- fledging at rates similar to those of unparasitized broods.'

Of 347 mockingbird nests studied 89% were parasitized with one or more cowbird eggs, 35% receiving more than three, and 16% more than five (typically, they received around three).

'It might be expected that this high rate of parasitism would encourage a host to evolve more effective anti-parasite defences,' said Ros Gloag from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'In fact, the opposite is probably true: the higher the intensity of parasitism, the higher the frequency of puncturing attacks and the greater the importance of diluting this risk. Thus, hosts benefit more by not rejecting parasite eggs when there are more parasites around.'

Shell oil spill off Nigeria likely worst in decade (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? An oil spill near the coast of Nigeria is likely the worst to hit those waters in a decade, a government official said Thursday, as slicks from the Royal Dutch Shell PLC spill approached the country's southern shoreline.

The slick from Shell's Bonga field has affected 115 miles (185 kilometers) of ocean near Nigeria's coast, Peter Idabor, who leads the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, told The Associated Press. Idabor said the slick continued to move toward the shore Thursday night, putting at risk birds, fish and other wildlife in the area.

Shell, the major oil producer in Nigeria, said Wednesday the spill likely occurred as workers tried to offload oil onto a waiting tanker. The company published photographs of the spill, showing a telltale rainbow sheen in the ocean, but said it believes that about 50 percent of the leaked oil has already evaporated.

The source of the leak has been plugged and experts from Britain were coming to help with the cleanup, Idabor said. Nigerian Navy ships also had been sent into the area to help control the spill, he said.

Shell estimates the Bonga spill likely was less than 40,000 barrels, or 1.68 million gallons. That's about the same amount of oil spilled offshore in 1998 at a Mobil field. The 1998 spill saw oil slicks extended for more than 100 miles (some 160 kilometers) to Lagos, the country's commercial capital.

"Since the Mobil spill, this is just about the most major one," Idabor said.

Nigerian authorities hope to use oil booms and chemicals to disperse or collect the spilled oil, Idabor said. In a statement, Shell said its Nigerian subsidiary already had sent ships out to the slick to use dispersant on the oil sheen. The company also said it would use infrared equipment to trace places where the sheen is the thickest.

However, the size of the spill may be even larger. SkyTruth, a nonprofit group based in West Virginia that uses satellite imagery to detect environmental problems, estimated the oil spill might stretch across roughly 350 square miles (920 square kilometers) of ocean ? three times what Nigerian authorities believe.

"The spill could be near the upper limit of what Shell has stated," John Amos, SkyTruth's founder and president, told the AP on Thursday. However, he said he needed more information to determine the spill's true scope.

Bonga sits about 75 miles (120 kilometers) off Nigeria's coast. It can produce about 200,000 barrels of oil and 150 million cubic feet of gas a day, according to Shell's Nigerian subsidiary. Production at the field, which Shell operates in partnership with Italy's Eni SpA, Exxon Mobil Corp., France's Total SA and the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., has been halted since the discovery of the spill.

Environmentalists blame Shell and other foreign oil firms for polluting the country's oil-rich Niger Delta. Some environmentalists say as much as 550 million gallons of oil poured into the delta during Shell's roughly 50 years of production in Nigeria ? a rate roughly comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. An estimated 11 million gallons was released during the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska.

Shell in recent years has said most of the spills in the delta are caused by militant attacks or thieves tapping into pipelines to steal crude oil, which ends up sold into the black market or cooked into a crude diesel or kerosene. Company statistics kept by Shell show spills have dropped as militant attacks in the region subsided, though this single spill at Bonga roughly doubles the amount of oil spilled by Shell this year.

Apparently predicting interest in the spill would grow, Shell already had taken out Internet advertising Thursday on search engines, directing those searching for the spill to their website. Jonathan French, a Shell spokesman in London, said the advertising came in the "interests of full transparency" so people can read the company's updates on the spill.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the U.S.

Colorado Considering Big Campaign Finance Changes ? CBS Denver

DENVER (AP) ? Colorado?s campaign finance rules are either roadblocks to free speech or necessary to keep big money in check when it comes to campaigns, according to testimony Thursday from supporters and critics of proposed changes.

?Our goal is to create safe-harbor rules so people know what they?re doing,? Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler said at the beginning of public testimony. He is proposing a sweeping rewrite of Colorado?s campaign finance rules, what he calls a simple clarification of state election rules.

His proposals include limiting some campaign-finance fines, raising the cap on donations to certain political groups before they have to report to the state and other changes.

Critics argued that Gessler?s changes would make it easier for deep-pocketed donors to influence elections.

?Our voices would be drowned out by special interests with fat wallets,? said the Rev. Dawn Riley Duval of Denver?s Shorter AME Church.

Other activists said Gessler was trying to clarify campaign-finance rules to make it easier for average folks to participate in politics.

?They will be helpful for people like me, who are part-time activists, so they don?t lose their shirts in a campaign-finance lawsuit,? said Diana Hsieh, who campaigned last year against an unsuccessful ballot measure that would have banned abortion.

Among the changes would be a new cap on fines for campaign-finance violations. Gessler argued that it was unfair not to set any statute of limitations on a fine, because other areas of the law set maximum fines.

Democratic Sen. John Morse, who testified against Gessler?s changes, argued that setting that cap, which could be as little as $9,000 in total for a single violation, would invite advocacy groups to consider the fines as the cost of doing business. Morse said hefty fines are an important safeguard.

?You have to follow the rules of transparency if you?re going to be involved in the political process and telling people how to vote,? Morse said.

Gessler has also proposed that groups wouldn?t have to report campaign spending on ballot initiatives unless that amount exceeds 30 percent of ?the organization?s total spending.? Critics argued that setting a percentage threshold, instead of a numerical cap, would allow corporations to spend millions for or against a ballot measure without oversight, while smaller advocacy groups would have to file reports on lesser sums.

Gessler told one activist he?d consider changing that suggestion, but he pointed out that no amount exists now and he was only trying to suggest a clear guideline.

?I agree with you 100 percent that it treats small organizations and large organizations the same,? Gessler said.

The hearing drew testimony from both political parties, with the state Democratic Party?s lawyer, Martha Tierney, arguing against many of the rule changes.

?The net effect of the rules is to create less disclosure of political activity in the state of Colorado,? Tierney said.

The chairman of the state GOP, Ryan Call, said revising campaign finance rules have ?been a long time coming? and that Gessler?s suggestions would make it easier for non-lawyers to participate.

Call said that current rules are ?muddy guidelines that invite litigation ? or chill speech.?

Residents who couldn?t make Thursday?s hearing have until Dec. 23 to submit comments. After that, Gessler has 180 days to decide whether to change the rules.

If critics don?t like the changes, they would have to sue the secretary of state?s office or suggest new rules.

Howard Stern pledges to stir up "America's Got Talent" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Controversial radio host Howard Stern, who was named on Thursday as a new judge on family TV show "America's Got Talent", said he would give honest opinions and warned "feelings are going to be hurt."

Stern, 57, will replace departing talk show host Piers Morgan on the panel when the talent show returns for a 7th season in the summer of 2012, broadcaster NBC said.

The shock jock, known for his sexually explicit interviews and foul language, will continue to host his daily radio program for SiriusXM and production of the television show will move to New York to accommodate Stern's radio schedule.

The naming of Stern drew sharp criticism from some groups and fans of the show. It was deemed "an act of desperation for a flailing network," by the Parents Television Council.

PTC president Tim Winter called Stern "a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity" who was not suitable for a prime-time network TV show watched by families.

Winter said NBC, which has languished for several years at the bottom of the four main U.S. TV networks, "risks losing millions in advertising dollars", suggesting the PTC would urge its members to pressure advertisers to pull their commercials.

A writer named slawson on People magazine's comment board posted: "AGT use to be my absolute favorite show. With Stern (YUCK!!!), I know I will no longer watch it. Wow...What was the network thinking. Taking a clean, fun, innocent show to have a "wannabe" porn king judging. Wow, just wow, seriously."

However, NBC reality programming chief Paul Telegdy said Stern's "larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to 'America's Got Talent'."

Stern, whose raunchy humor and comments on religion and race have often landed him in hot water, will join judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel on the show which features performers ranging in age from children to seniors.

He told his radio listeners on Thursday that he would pull no punches with the young contestants, and their mothers.

"I am going to tell you your kiddie has no talent...this nonsense of Howie and Sharon putting through less than talented people has got to stop. Under my administration, there will be no Frank Sinatra impersonators winning," he said.

"I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but feelings are going to be hurt," Stern added.

"America's Got Talent," created by British entrepreneur Simon Cowell, is one of NBC's most successful shows and the outspoken Stern had been Cowell's top choice to join the judging panel.

The radio show host lobbied hard but unsuccessfully last year for a judge's spot on "American Idol".

Stern's new salary was not revealed but Forbes.com writer Jeff Bercovici estimated that he could get about $15 million and that NBC could spend some $10 million to move the show to New York.

Stern said that he was not joining "America's Got Talent" for the money. "I didn't do it for the money. I did it because I like the show and I need to be a judge. That's it," he said.

Oh, happy days! Scott Baio is really not dead

By Courtney Hazlett

If you?re the type to follow trends on Twitter, you might have noticed that #RIPScottBaio is trending. If you?re the type of person who gets their facts from Wikipedia, you might have then learned that he "died on December 14, 2011 of a diaper-related illness."

If any of the above news about our beloved Chachi rocked your world, I?m here to confirm that?Baio is doing just fine. ?He is alive and well. Couldn?t be more merry,? a spokesperson for the former "Happy Days" star said via phone on Wednesday.

Baio joins an elite group of celebrities whose early demise has been falsely reported on various social network sites. Jeff Goldblum was erroneously reported dead on the same day that Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died; Kanye West was also reported dead, and a web site setting the record straight was created.

Twitter Is 2011's Most-Buzzed About Social Networkvar NREUMQ=NREUMQ||[];NREUMQ.push(["mark","firstbyte",new Date().getTime()]); (Mashable)

Twitter topped an annual list of most-buzzed about social networks, edging ahead of LinkedIn and 2010's most-buzzed network YouTube. The annual rankings by digital marketing agency Zeta Interactive measure volume (number of mentions in more than 200 million blogs, social media outlets and online posts) and tone (comparing positive and negative buzz). The Zeta Buzz score is calculated by the volume ranking multiplied by the percent positive ranking divided by 10, using data pulled since January 2011.

[More from Mashable: Top Tech Companies To Work For in 2012: Facebook Beats Google, Apple]

"2011 is the year of twitter," Zeta Interactive CEO Minna Rhee told Mashable. "For culture, breaking news and celebrities it is the social network. I think that's reflected in the much more positive tonal ranking."

Facebook, the world's largest social network, finished fourth, despite its superior size. The network had the most negative buzz of the top 10, with only 70% of discussion considered positive.

[More from Mashable: Demi Moore: Changing @MrsKutcher Twitter Name Isn?t ?Top Priority?]

LinkedIn's second place finish, Rhee suspects, is because of the job creation hype. "This is a market where people are concerned about staying connected with professional contacts. They need to stay connected from a personal perspective."

Rhee is most interested in the rise of two list newcomers, Meetup (sixth place) and Ning (ninth). She believes the two's rise reflects a heightened desire for personal, local content. The two social networks had the highest tonal rankings, with 93% positive buzz.

On the decline are photo and video-sharing services YouTube (third) and Flickr (eighth), which fell behind their 2010 rankings when they finished first and second, respectively.

Google+ did not finish in the top 10, due in large part to its late June launch. Overall, Google's nascent social network finished 12th on the annual list, unable to make up for lost time before its inception. The new network received 89% positive buzz, indicating it will be a strong contender to perform well in the coming year.

Take a look at the complete rankings below. What site would you call 2011's social network of the year? Let us know your choice in the comments.

LG Prada 3.0 peeks out from the curtain ahead of its catwalk launch

While our shirt is still being pressed ahead of the launch event in London later today, yet more details have leaked on the LG Prada 3.0. Some decidedly realistic press shots have surfaced ahead of the phone's big debut, alongside some concrete-looking specifications. The dual-core OMAP 4430 processor is apparently clocked at 1GHz, with a high definition screen showing off a classy monotoned Android skin, lying over Gingerbread version 2.3.7. The spec sheet also reveals 8GB of storage, expandable by microSD, with an eight megapixel auto-focus camera peering out from the textured backing. Interestingly, the slab with style will also pack NFC according to the leak. We've got a few more hours to wait until we can give it a personal going-over -- fashion phone obsessives, hold on.
