Assad forces bombard northern towns, avoid Turkish border

ANTAKYA, Turkey (Reuters) - Helicopter gunships bombarded a strategic town in northern Syria overnight and tanks moved close to the commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels said, but kept well clear of new Turkish air defenses installed to curb Syrian action near its frontiers.

Turkish commanders inspected the missile batteries deployed on the border region on Thursday following Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane a week ago, which has sharply raised tensions between the two nations.

The Turkish deployments, a graphic warning to President Bashar al-Assad, coincide with rising violence across Syria and increasingly urgent international efforts to forge a peace deal as the nation slips into full-blown war.

As the Turkish-Syrian dimension ratcheted up further pressure, peace envoy Kofi Annan said on Friday he was "optimistic" that crisis talks in Geneva on Saturday would produce an acceptable outcome, which has so far proved elusive.

Senior officials holding preparatory talks in Geneva on Friday failed to overcome differences on Annan's plan for a political transition. Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to the text. Russian diplomats said the work continued but they would not "impose" a solution on Syria.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over dinner in St. Petersburg that he saw a "very good chance" of finding common ground when the group of foreign ministers met Annan in Geneva.

A senior U.S. State Department official said, however, that differences remained between Washington and Moscow on Syria. Of the chances of an accord when the ministers met again in Geneva, the official said: "We may get there tomorrow. We may not."

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made it clear Assad would be risking what he called the 'wrath' of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.

Erdogan told a rally in the eastern city of Erzurum on Friday, broadcast by Turkish television: "We will not hesitate to teach a lesson to those who aim heavy weapons at their own people and at neighboring countries."

Recently, there were clashes close to the border between Syrian forces and rebels. Last weekend, Damascus said "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey were killed and there have been reports of Syrian forces shooting into camps for refugees in Turkey.

The United States, Britain and France have said that Assad is responsible for the violence, which the United Nations estimates has killed at least 10,000 people, and is no longer fit to govern. Russia and China, however, reject what they describe as Western calls for "regime change".

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA), is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.

SYRIAN TANKS MASS

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 190 people, including 125 civilians, were killed on Thursday.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, a grouping of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces, said around 170 Syrian tanks had assembled at an infantry school near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, just 30 km (19 miles) from the Turkish border.

"They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," Sheikh told Reuters by telephone from the border.

Omar Abdallah, an activist in Idlib coordinating with the Free Syrian Army said: "After taking hits in rural Aleppo and Idlib, the army is re-grouping ... There is speculation that these forces intend to ring Aleppo, starting July 1."

Rebel sources in Turkey's Hatay region said Assad's helicopters attacked Saraqeb, a strategic town deep in Idlib province, but kept away from the area directly along the Turkish border in the rural regions of Idlib and Aleppo provinces.

Neither Turkey, which fears a local clash escalating into a regional sectarian conflagration, nor Syria, has any interest in a confrontation on their shared border.

Ankara, which has the second biggest army in NATO, called an emergency NATO meeting after its warplane was shot down.

Turkey has in the past talked about creating a humanitarian corridor on Syrian territory if refugee flows became dangerously unmanageable or the scale of killing in Syria became intolerable. But it had always said this would require international endorsement.

"NATO just doesn't look like it's in the mood," David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's, said. "What you might get is the Turks forcing a de facto no-fly zone."

SQUARING UP?

Erdogan announced earlier this week that he had issued new rules of engagement to his border troops and said any Syrian military elements approaching Turkish borders and deemed a threat would be treated as a target. But he failed, perhaps deliberately, to specify how close Syrian forces could come to the border before becoming vulnerable.

Rebels sources said they saw two Syrian attack helicopters on Friday, flying about 4 km from the Turkish border in Idlib province and landing at an army base at Bab al-Hawa, close to Reyhanli, one of the places where Turkey has stationed anti-aircraft defenses.

It was the first time aircraft had been spotted close to the border and appeared to test Turkey's new rules of engagement.

"The Syrians might accept a very narrow zone along the border. Syria will remain very reluctant to get involved in any conflict with Turkey. They would be up against a very serious military foe," said Malcolm Chalmers, research director at Britain's Royal United Services Institute.

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed. Diplomacy has failed to produce agreement between Western powers, backing the opposition, and Russia, which has used its U.N. veto to block Western and Sunni Arab moves to drive Assad from power.

Ahead of Saturday's meeting, Russia proposed changes to Annan's plan for a national unity government in Syria, despite initially supporting it, but the United States, Britain and France rejected the amendments, Western diplomats said.

Russia and the other permanent U.N. Security Council members told Annan this week they supported a transitional cabinet that could include government and opposition members but would "exclude ... those whose continued presence and participation would undermine the credibility of the transition and jeopardize stability and reconciliation", according to Annan's proposal.

Diplomats told Reuters that Annan's idea of excluding certain people was clearly referring to Assad.

Although Russia signaled to Annan this week that his plan was acceptable, foreign minister Lavrov reversed course on Thursday, diplomats said. Diplomats said the Russians demanded that Annan remove from his proposal the language about excluding people from a Syrian national unity government.

Annan had made preliminary acceptance of his guidelines for a political transition for Syria a condition for organizing Saturday's meeting of foreign ministers in Geneva. It is to include Clinton and Lavrov and colleagues from Britain, France, China, Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar. Iran and Saudi Arabia, regional powers deeply at odds over Syria, were not invited.

"I think we are going to have a good meeting tomorrow," Annan told Reuters Television on Friday. "I am optimistic."

Assad on Thursday dismissed the notion of any outside solution to the 16-month-old uprising against his rule.

"We will not accept any non-Syrian, non-national model, whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries. No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do."

BARRY RUBIN: CHINA MOVING UP THE LADDER IN IMPORTANCE FOR ISRAEL???

?

I argued this point a few years ago, but in the context of the Obama administration?s overt attack on U.S. relations with the Jewish state. Israel, like any other state, has to safeguard its own self interests.

By Barry Rubin? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??? ?

There is a remarkable amount of interest in China about Israel and Jews, as I discovered during a trip to China sponsored by SIGNAL, the Sino-Israel Global Network and Academic Leadership.

The most obvious reason is that the Chinese?one important official called it the ?little superpower?perceive that Israel in particular and the Jewish people in general have been success stories. Ten or twenty years ago this would have been less unique in the world. ?But now, sad to say, it stands out more because the United States and Europe, perhaps only temporarily, are not working very well.

Of course, on a strategic level, Israel and China have some differing interests but these are less important than they may appear to be. China wants to have commerce with everyone, including Iran, and is protecting Syria in the international framework.

Yet China has significantly reduced energy imports from Iran in order to show support for the international efforts against Iran?s nuclear drive and clear signals have been sent to Tehran. Clearly, Chinese interests don?t benefit from Tehran having a nuclear arsenal and being a destabilizing force in the region. As for Syria, Israel?s position on whether the current regime should be overthrown has not been unambiguous. The Chinese argue that a radical Islamist government worse than the current one in Damascus may well come to power. That is not clear but the concern is a reasonable one, especially because U.S. policy is supporting the Islamists in Syria.

Israel and China also have many parallel interests, among them the desire for stability in the Middle East and the hope that revolutionary Islamism doesn?t spread. And China?s policy of dealing with all other countries has another side, since it will not let its relationships with Israel be interfered with by any possible Arab or Iranian demands. Indeed, if China decides to become the main customer for Israeli natural gas and oil exports, the Jerusalem-Beijing relationship may be Israel?s most important link, second only to the one with the United States.

Australian Gay and Lesbian Law Blog: Qld: to exclude lesbian co ...

Last week the Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie announced in debate on the changes to the Civil Partnership Law:

?What we are also going to deal with is the other issue that that bill dealt with and that is parentage presumptions and parentage orders. Honourable members will recall at the time that the member for Southern Downs supported two lesbian women, who had a natural birth, both having parentage orders. I make it absolutely clear that going forward the government will be amending the provisions around altruistic surrogacy and the Surrogacy Act to repeal the provisions with respect to same-sex couples, de factos of less than two years and singles. That is the policy position we took years ago when we debated the Surrogacy Act.?

What the Attorney General was saying in effect was that the amendments to the Status of Children Act 1978 (Qld) contained in the Surrogacy Act 2010 (Qld) and the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 2003 (Qld) was that lesbian co-mothers will no longer be recognised on birth certificates.?

This recognition was brought about by virtue of the Surrogacy Act 2010 (Qld) and has resulted in a number of lesbian co-mothers being recognised on birth certificates as ?parent?.? The legislation to allow this has been consistent with other States such as New South Wales.? It is not known if the Government proposal is that women who are now recognised on birth certificates as ?parents? by virtue of being a lesbian co-mother will be removed from the birth certificate or whether? it is only to apply in the future.

The proposed change will mean that co-mothers will not be recognised in a moment of joy namely at the time of the birth certificate as a ?parent? but will be recognised as in a moment of pain if and when their relationships break down because the effect of their actions under the Family Law Act will be that they are ?parents?.

Even worse for a lesbian mother seeking child support, although the Family Law Act specifies that the co-mother would be a ?parent?,? internal procedures with the Child Support Agency are not always so clear cut and I have been advised of difficulties in establishing ?parentage?? in dealing with the agency.? The planned move will in my view make it more expensive and tie up tax payers resources in the Federal Magistrate?s Court unnecessarily as to argument as to whether or not the co-mother was a parent, a step that is easily avoided by having her named on the birth certificate.

I will be speaking at a forum tonight at the Sportsman?s Hotel, Leichhardt Street, Spring Hill at 6.30pm on this point.

Commercial Real Estate Tips, Tricks And Advice | Key West ...

27 June 2012

Posted by Dennis under: Key West Commercial Real Estate .

If you want to rent your commercial property, well built solid buildings are your best bet. Tenants will be more likely to rent space in this type of building, as it looks taken care of. Not are the buildings more sturdy, there will be less maintenance issues for the owner and the tenant.

Don?t make any big real estate purchases until you?ve evaluated the unemployment rates, income levels, and expansion rates of the area. Think about what locations are near where you are thinking of buying. Hot spots are usually around places like hospitals or universities because the surrounding neighborhood is going to be more lively and open with jobs available.

Read the disclosures when you?re ready to hire a real estate agent. Try to beware of dual agency. In this sort of situation, the agency acts as both parts of the transaction. This means that the agent is representing the interests of the lessor and lessee simultaneously. You and the other party should both agree if dual agency is to be okay.

Inflation should be at the top of your mind when considering purchasing commercial real estate. The days when leases used regular adjustments to protect you against inflation are over. This is not the case today, leaving you completely vulnerable to inflation losses.

Do not approach commercial estate as an easy way to make money. You need to put in a tremendous effort, which involves a big initial investment and a lot of time, to give yourself the best chance of success. But, even when everything seems to come together nicely, profit can be elusive.

What is a goal that you have for the next couple of weeks or monthsWhat are the obstacles you will have to overcome in reaching this goalWhat are the steps you will have to take to achieve this goal Make a list of things you will have to change in your own behavior in order to reach your goal.

I want to lose 10 pounds. The obstacle is that I love chocolate. Also working in hotels there is always extra food aroundThe steps I am taking are1. Stop buying chocolate2. Buy fruit instead3. Have chocolate protein shake low fat low calories high protein mixed with lots of ice for breakfast and for an afternoon snack every day instead of a mocha from Starbucks in the morning and candy in the afternoon4. I will have to have the willpower to not go to Starbucks and to not eat junk food which I think I will be able to do since I am getting the tasty chocolate shakes that are really delicious and healthy too.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Im 22 yr old female. 5 7 222 lbs Need to lose as much weight as possible by Thanksgiving. I just bought a treadmill but Im not sure how often or how intense my workouts should be. Do you think following the weight watchers plan drinking TONS of water and exercising 6 times a week for 30 min per session is sufficient What happens if I hit a plateau Should I increase workouts or decrease food intake or both Please help.

HelloI was having trouble losing weight and sticking with a diet plan until last month. I started drinking Slimfast for breakfast one for lunch with a small salad and then a bigger salad with some protien for dinner. I workout on the tread mill 30 minutes at least 4 times a week. I do not eat anything else but the slimfast and salad with fat free dressing. I put whatever kind of veggies I want in my dinner salad and sometimes some croutons but just a few and some tuna or chicken for protien. I have lost 10 pounds since July 20.

On my days off I put a half a banana in my breakfast shake and use a blender with some crushed ice. Makes a yummy shake and holds me till lunch. I do sometimes get hungry but the fast weight loss has kept me motivated and Iove getting on my scale everyday and seeing another half pound down. Its working for me but you have to find something that works for you. I feel like I can stick to this for the long haul. I would like to lose another 40 pounds. I dont miss all the other foods I am not eating and that is unusual for me.

But I really dont miss it. I look forward to my dinner salad and try to make it different with different dressings and even a little trail mix sometimesthe dried fruit and nut kind. Makes it like dessert food. It is all worth it when I see those numbers going down. Good luck and dont let anyone pressure you or guilt you into eating anything you dont want to. You are in control of your eating and your body. Take care.

Lego and Google Chrome teamup, want to cover Australasia in models and plastic bricks

Lego has allied itself with Google's Chrome browser, creating a web app that lets users craft their own houses, creatures and models, and then delicately place them across the whole of Australia and New Zealand. Celebrating 50 years of pre-teen Lego architecture in the Land Down Under, you can grab a plot of land from the source, start throwing some bricks together now and share your creations on the very public map and Google+. According to Australia's Daily Telegraph, Lego Build hopes to roll out globally through Chrome later this year, but one continent should keep us busy until Google's I/O conference kicks off later this week.

Cynthia R. Green, Ph.D.: Get Passionate About Your Memory: 4 Reasons Why You Should Get Intellectually Excited Right Now

What's your latest passion?

One of the most powerful messages coming out of the brain fitness science these days is that having intellectual passions is a major factor in any good brain fitness plan. Things we do to "stretch" our minds force us to think differently or look at the world through a constantly evolving lens. While on the surface such activities seem like the most obvious way to keep our minds sharp, the science behind intellectual engagement is truly more complex than simply a "use it or lose it" equation.

So why do I and other brain health experts spend so much time getting people to stretch their brains? Why does what we do with our minds matter so much? Here are some of the reasons why I'm a big fan of being intellectually passionate at every age:

  • A passionate mind leads to a healthy brain. One measure of brain fitness is the physiological health of our brain itself. Intellectual enrichment has been associated with enhanced neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to make new connections and grow new neurons in both animal and human studies. For example, a German study found that adults who became proficient jugglers showed increased brain volume on imaging studies.
  • A passionate mind gives us a buffer against serious memory loss. We have known for a while that staying intellectually engaged is associated with a lower risk for dementia in later life. This finding has been replicated across a number of large, epidemiological studies both here and in Europe. Such evidence has given rise to the "cognitive reserve" theory, which states that the neuroplasticity supported by such activities build a buffer zone of neural connections and new neurons that delay the onset of dementia symptoms. Most recently, a study out of Rush University Medical Center offers further support to this theory, with reported findings showing that folks who report high levels of lifelong intellectual engagement who develop memory impairment do so later in life and have a sharper and shorter period of impairment.
  • A passionate mind gives us a chance to boost daily brain skills. "Stretch activities" often help us better maintain everyday intellectual skills that are challenged by the aging process. These skills, primarily our ability to keep focused, think quickly and think nimbly, are best addressed by specific exercises played against the clock. However, engaging intellectually across the board -- be it by taking a language class or even working -- gives us more chances to "work out" those skills than we would have otherwise. Volunteering at a local youth center, for example, not only engages your mind, but also forces you to pay closer attention, hold conversations with folks you might not otherwise encounter, and think nimbly to keep up, all of which keep those daily brain skills better trained.
  • A passionate mind keeps us purposed and relevant. One of the most overlooked aspects of growing older is that we are still actually growing. Intellectual passions allow us the ways and means by which we can continue to think about and expand on who we are. Such pursuits give us the chance to constantly question ourselves, to ask the "what if" question that keeps us engaged (not to mention engaging). It is through such intellectual passions that we can learn more about our purpose and determine the legacy we wish to leave behind. While these aspects of well-being may seem more spiritual in nature, there is much to suggest that they matter greatly to brain health, in that they impact our ability to think wisely and to continue to engage richly and meaningfully in the world.

It was Rene Descartes, the French philosopher, who centuries ago counseled us that "It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well." While our understanding of the science behind having a good mind may have advanced, the advice remains the same. Take up a new language, master a new computer game, enroll for that drawing class you've always meant to take. Whatever your latest passion, pursue and enjoy! Consider such passionate pursuits part of your "Total Brain Health" prescription for staying vital and independent -- they are good for your mind, good for your brain, and, perhaps best of all, good for your spirit.

Installment Five: Alex Sharry - Smalldoggies Magazine

In the early 2000s, Mickey Hess taught creative writing at a community college in New Albany, Indiana. Since 2006, he has taught creative writing at Rider University in New Jersey. ?Interviews with my Former Students? finds Mickey tracking down his old students nearly a decade later, to see if they still write and to find out if they learned anything.

Interviews With My Former Students
Installment Five: Alex Sharry
Historic Lawrenceville, New Jersey

Mickey Hess: Alex Sharry, writer and professional armpit model, what have you been up to since you left our fine Rider University campus?

Alex Sharry: Aside from maintaining epic armpits, I?ve kind of been all over the place metaphorically. Geographically, it?s NY. I left Rider the year after I took your creative writing class and transferred to The New School where I studied Writing (when it?s your major, you capitalize the ?W? so people know it?s official).

It was there that I was first introduced to things like anxiety, syntax, trust fund babies, hyperbole, and all the other things that come with people somehow making blowing lines of cocaine off of the lid of a toilet bowl before Don Quixote class ?chic.?

But since those dog days are over, there?s been a lot. There?s been jobs I hated, jobs I was ambivalent about, and jobs I loved. There?ve been people I hated, people I was ambivalent about, and people I loved. Currently, I am coming down from the spin cycle that is your early post-graduation 20s and am a yoga instructor, part-time nanny, and top secret personal diary columnist.

MH: Without exposing your top secret identity, tell me about the writing you?ve been working on recently.

AS: To be honest, my writing has changed as of late. For one, I graduated from school thinking the writing world was my oyster (for lack of a better clich?). I graduated in the heart of the recession. Our dean reminded us of that with his congratulatory speech. Literally, his only words of wisdom were ?This is a really rough time. The world isn?t what is used to be. Take what you can get in the job market, but always remember the enjoyable Liberal Arts experience you had here at Lang.?

It was the most ominous thing? everyone was a little turned off by it because we were so damn eager to become famous professional Joan Didions. Each and every one of us. That was the problem. Under the campus shelter, you ARE a successful writer. You?re writing semi-regular columns for the school paper, stressing about your thesis and working on a new poem that you?ll workshop in class on Thursday. You?re writing? and doing it and getting grades and getting a diploma.

Bur our dean was right. It was a triple slap in the face and one on the ass when we graduated and walked into the real world, which was and still is super fucked up and in a super duper awkward growing pain stage as the digital age continues eating everything for dinner. So, I wrote? but all of a sudden I found myself blogging not as myself. It was literally like someone changed my writerly vocal cords and I was this bitchy blogger kind of just trying to be snarky enough to get read by other miserable people.

Joan Didion

I just broke my collarbone. This one. Right. Here.

It wasn?t inspiration fueling my work, it was imitation. I was writing about stuff I didn?t even want to hear myself write about (mostly about being a 20-something NY?er who is lost in Google translation). So? I literally stopped. I stopped writing like that and began writing on my own personal blog in the format I wanted. It was private and only shared with friends, but it was fun and in that time I reconnected with what it is about writing that I enjoy. Fiction. Creative Non-Fiction.

It all came back a little bit and that?s when I decided that I needed to take a breather from trying to be a successful writer right away. The idea of that was just not even an idea anymore. It was squashed by the reality of the times we live in where? how the HECK do you make a living doing anything, let alone doing what you love? ?So? what I do now is sit and write how I want to write. I recently have been working on a fictional piece about a girl ?dating? her 45-year-old boss. I don?t love it, but I?m writing it.

Before that I documented a break-up? kind of just wrote about 50 one-liners a day about the things that happen? even the most banal. I thought it was interesting enough? my grandma liked it. Also, I have recently been re-reading my diary from high school and have turned some of those entries into little things? I mean, I was a freak in high school. I was this self-loathing miserable half-human walking around feeling so sorry for myself about the stupidest of things. It?s hilarious? especially when I talk about how much I loved my boyfriend and friends and also how much I hated my boyfriend and friends. (You have a daughter? get ready, dude. Women are NUTSO).

There?s also these little moments in there where I guess I was crying as I was writing and my tears smudged the ink and I found it SO necessary to circle the smudge marks and label each one ?tear.? I know. Anyway, In terms of my writing, I think more than anything else, I have been writing about the transition my mind went through when I did my yoga teacher training.

I don?t really know how to compile all of that into this blurb, but I will say it was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life and literally, without me even being conscious it was happening, changed the ways in which my mind functions in the world. So? I often find myself writing about that, about yoga stuff. About mediation? the connection of the mind, body and breath and how relevant that is to everything we do.

In conclusion, All-in-all, Finally; my writing is scattered, but it certainly is mine and I am much happier where I?m at with it now than I was before. I hope one day to write more for the public? get back out onto the blogs, but as of now I?m happy in my little hole.

MH: Sounds like you?ve packed a career?s worth of writer?s anxiety into the past couple years.?Speaking of students being eager to?become famous professional Joan Didions, I have three questions for you:

1. A complaint I?ve heard a lot from my colleagues at schools where I?ve taught is that all creative writing students believe they?ll get rich writing poetry and?a creative writing professor would be fairer to say what your Dean said from day one of class. It?s tough enough out there to get published and to find readers, let alone hope to make even a small supplemental income doing it. Would I have been a better teacher to encourage you to stop wasting your talents on short stories and poems and instead to sign up for business writing?

2. Do you think there?s money in becoming a famous professional Joan Didion impersonator? Like for bat mitzvas or whatever?

3. When a 76-year-old Joan Didion broke her collarbone last year and that news trended on Twitter, I reacted with what I thought was Twitter gold ? ?Where were all you well-wishers when Joan Didion broke MY collarbone? ? and no one retweeted it. Not one person.

Do you think that?s a funny tweet, Alex?

AS: 1. My belief is that a lot of creatives think that because they?re in the art world, business is irrelevant to them. It?s funny because I was having a similar conversation with one of my closest friends just last night. He and I were on his couch talking about writing, the New School, and all that stuff. He is a popular blogger who just signed a book deal and what comes with all of that is the reality that at the end of the day, there?s a lot more business-thinking than there is
creative-thinking.

Once you have a foot in the door, it switches over to the business of keeping your foot wedged in that door, while hoping to jam your other one in there someday. It?s all business. Certain moves simply can?t be made because of the popularity around your name once you?ve been known to do something or once you?ve adopted a certain online personality. So. What I think should be done is there should be, like, an elective or something that?s called Business of the Arts or The Business of Being Creative. Titles are not my thing, so someone else should name it. Anyone? Thoughts?

But essentially what this class should be is a lecture where there?s always a guest speaker. The class could be an hour and a half, once a week, but folks like you, your pal Mr. Joe Meno and guys like my friend who has made it in the blogging world? people like that? discuss the business.

Liberal Arts students get stuck in the rut I did because they are so fixated on the destination. They just know what they want to be when they grow up and don?t think about the BS they have to go through? the paperwork and grueling business meetings, etc? to get there. So, once an author?s book goes out on the table at Barnes and Noble, said author has readings and book signings and are asked to lecture at colleges and read at colleges, but no one asks them about the annoying parts of getting there. No one asks them how big a pay cut they took to get their book?s front cover facing out on the shelf as opposed to just the spine cover. No one talks about all those things. And that?s fine.

When I was in your creative writing course, it was perfect. We were taught to use our imaginations and write and we did just that. It was innocent, it was fun, it was everything it should have been and it would have been ruined if you were Ebenezer Scrooge in the corner with a jaded, empty stare slamming the idea that none of us are going to be able to buy food let alone pay rent with a writer?s salary.

However, it should be mentioned, and as Lit students/Writing students and I think all Arts students, there should be a requirement to take a course that allows them to hear it from the people who have gone through/are going through it. It?s an opportunity to lift the veil from their eyes, without slamming it in their face during an actual course where within the confines of that course they should just be fanning the fire of their creative mind.

I mean, honestly, there is so much that happens to you when you graduate and hit that wall of realization and personally, I think it?s an important wall to hit because it truly tests the level of passion you have for what you?re doing. As I mentioned earlier, in college it?s easy to feel passionate about everything because you?re a kid-adult just l-i-v-i-n?, man. So, walls are important because they give you the choice to climb them or not. You?re only going to climb a wall as annoyingly huge as the one to be a successful writer if that?s seriously what you want to do.

2. ?I don?t know about bat mitzvah Joan, but I think there?s hope for stripper Joan. Moan Tition. She?s going places.

3. ?I?m sorry no one replied to your tweet. I think it?s funny, Mickey. If I could go back in time I?d retweet it or like it or
counter-tweet or sound my bat signal or something. I just think Joan fans are really serious. They?re all waiting for someone in their life to die so that they can write about it. (But aren?t we all?) #dark

MH: I?ve talked with Lauren Cerand about teaching exactly that course ? the business of writing. I?m on board. Maybe the three of us can team-teach it.

You?re talking to a man who wrote a book about the business of hip hop, and how rappers like Jay-Z and Wu-Tang have used their art to brag about their business sense. Tao Lin does a little of that with his writing (at least he shows the stats of how much he?s earned from his books), and Kurt Vonnegut was very open about the material side of his career in interviews ? at one time he said he?d made about three bucks off every man, woman, and child who died in the firebombing of Dresden, which he survived to write a novel about.

But I?d want the class, if I taught it, to be less about how to scrounge up a living writing stuff you don?t enjoy writing, and more about studying the people who created their own business model and sustained a readership by writing the stuff they loved and keeping the scrounging for a salary a separate thing.

Since you left Rider I?ve been including more of the business side in my classes. Seems like more of it every semester. One student wrote in a course evaluation that I should not start the semester with all the depressing stuff about how little money a writer can make ? she said it kind of cast a pall over the fun of reading and writing. So that?s the other side of it ? it?d be pretty hypocritical for me to make money teaching a creative writing class that discouraged others from writing.

I had those professors when I was a student, and they just seemed like they?d been beaten down by the futility of their approach to teaching, which was to come in and say they were miserable because they?d written and written and never become as successful as they wanted to be, so by this point they hated writing and teaching writing, and even reading. Those were the professors who told me not to go to grad school in English because I?d never get a job as a professor. And now here I am ready to discourage a whole new generation of students from making the choices I made.?I was trying to achieve a balance but I guess I failed in that student?s case.

Obviously, I?m in a bubble because I?ve made way more money from teaching writing than I?ll ever make from writing. But I wouldn?t discourage anyone from doing either of them. Just find ways not to drive yourself deeper into debt as you do it. My other lesson is that because there is so little money in writing books, never?make big compromises in your writing, because the rewards it brings are not worth it.

So you?ve found a balance, it sounds like, in discovering this yoga teacher/armpit model thing that pays money, and that you love to do, and is entirely separate from writing. That doesn?t sound like a bad way to go.

AS: At the end of the day we do what we can do and what we are best at doing. I think it?s important for all artists to come to terms with the fact that for a second they?ll have to take a shitty job to pay the bills, or be an intern or an editorial assistant for some a-hole one year younger than them. But it?s also important, amongst all the depressing chatter, to remember that it evens out. And eventually you wind up doing what you love, be it writing, teaching, editing or yogaing. I will always define half of myself as a writer. That?s in me. I like it and enjoy it and like thinking about it, but I wasn?t one of those who had the patience to climb that wall at that time in my life.

Let?s team-teach it!! I?m down. Or, also, if you ever just want to spew some ideas I can totally help you out with my input or thoughts or whatever. It?s awesome you?ve been adding the writer?s reality crash course to your classroom dynamic, but at the end of the day, sometimes you just want to write and sometimes it?s fun to live in the fictional world that is undergrad where you?re a famous writer at 25 living in Brooklyn with a Vespa. Just sayin?. Dare to dream.
