How To Teach Creative Writing To Young Children - A Teacher's Idea

Teaching children to write?creatively is not something that you can complete at any one particular grade level. It involves a series of planned situations and activities that gradually lead to independent writing. From as early as preschool a child's writing begins to take shape as he learns to interpret print. As he grows his understanding of that print is translated into a greater command of the language. Essentially, as he progresses through the grade levels his writing unfolds as a more personal stamp.

As a teacher my goal is to develop the writing skills?of my students. This means that I must slowly direct each child to writing independently. To do so I must model good writing, write with them collaboratively, guide their efforts and allow them to work on their own. These stages are summed up under the following headings:

  1. Modeled Writing
  2. Shared Writing
  3. Guided Writing
  4. Independent Writing

1. Modeled Writing

In this initial step I must demonstrate to my students that writing is the capturing of thoughts. As I think aloud I record what I actually want to say. Of course, conventions of spelling and grammar are very important, but these can be overlooked only to facilitate the free flow of ideas. Also it is rather helpful to students to generate a list of needed words on the chalkboard. As I model good writing behaviors I direct their focus on the importance of thinking through what I want to say.

Shared Writing allows the students to contribute ideas to create one piece with the assistance of the teacher as scribe. This allows them to view the behavior of writers during the writing process.

3. Guided Writing

In guided writing the teacher continually provides feedback to students to monitor the writing process. As students write the teacher asks questions that provoke thought and generate ideas. The teacher may look at writing conventions and word choice of students or even the completeness of ideas expressed. This guidance is what makes students become better writers!

Students are provided with frequent opportunities to write independently. They experiment with language and tweak their writing skills to resemble good writers. As students write on their own they learn how to edit their drafts in an effort to create a polished piece.?

Electrons confined inside nano-pyramids

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light.

Their results were recently published in the journal Nano Letters.

Quantum dots look like miniscule pyramids. Inside each of these nano-pyramids are always only one or two electrons that essentially "feel" the constricting walls around them and are therefore tightly constrained in their mobility. Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden. TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) have now studied the special energy states of the electrons trapped inside individual quantum dots.

Sharp energy levels

The behaviour of electrons in a material essentially determines its properties. Being spatially constrained in all three spatial dimensions, electrons inside a nano-pyramid can only occupy very specific energy levels -- which is why quantum dots are also called "artificial atoms." Where these energy levels lie depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material as well as the size of the nano-pyramid. "These sharply defined energy levels are exploited, for example, in highly energy-efficient lasers based on quantum dots. The light is produced when an electron drops from a higher energy level into a lower one. The energy difference between the two levels determines the colour of the light," Dr. Stephan Winnerl of HZDR explains.

Seeing electrons inside individual quantum dots

The researchers in Dresden working with Dr. Winnerl were recently the first to succeed in scanning transitions between energy levels in single quantum dots using infrared light. Although, they could only do this after overcoming a certain hurdle: While the pyramids of indium arsenide or indium gallium arsenide form spontaneously during a specific mode of crystal growth, their size varies within a certain range. Studying them with infrared light, for example, one obtains blurred signals because electrons in different sized pyramids respond to different infrared energies. This is why it is so important to obtain a detailed view of the electrons trapped inside a single quantum dot.

The scientists approached this task with the special method of scanning near-field microscopy. Laser light is shone onto a metallic tip less than 100 nanometers thick, which strongly collimates the light to a hundred times smaller than the wavelength of light, which is the spatial resolution limit for "conventional" optics using lenses and mirrors. By focusing this collimated light precisely onto one pyramid, energy is donated to the electrons, thereby exciting them to a higher energy level. This energy transfer can be measured by watching the infrared light scattered from the tip in this process. While near-field microscopy involves major signal losses, the light beam is still strong enough to excite the electrons inside a nano-pyramid. The method is also so sensitive that it can create a nanoscale image in which the one or two electrons inside a quantum dot stand out in clear contrast. In this fashion, Stephan Winnerl and his colleagues from HZDR, plus physicists from TU and IFW Dresden, studied the behaviour of electrons inside a quantum dot in great detail, thereby contributing towards our understanding of them.

Infrared light from the free electron laser

The infrared light used in the experiments came from the free electron laser at HZDR. This special laser is an ideal infrared radiation source for such experiments because the energy of its light can be adjusted to precisely match the energy level inside the quantum dots. The laser also delivers such intense radiation that it more than makes up for the unavoidable losses inherent to the method.

"Next, we intend to reveal the behaviour of electrons inside quantum dots at lower temperatures," Dr. Winnerl says. "From these experiments, we hope to gain even more precise insights into the confined behavior of these electrons. In particular, we want to gain a much better understanding of how the electrons interact with one another as well as with the vibrations of the crystal lattice." Thanks to its intense laser flashes in a broad, freely selectable spectral range, the free electron laser offers ideal conditions for the method of near-field microscopy in Dresden, which benefits particularly from the close collaboration with Prof. Lukas Eng of TU Dresden in the scope of DRESDEN-concept.

Video: Touch-sensitive tentacles catapult prey into carnivorous plant traps

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Swift predators are common in the animal world but are rare in the plant kingdom. New research shows that Drosera glanduligera, a small sundew from southern Australia, deploys one of the fastest and most spectacular trapping mechanisms known among carnivorous plants.

The study, published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE, is a collaboration between the Plant Biomechanics Group at the University of Freiburg and private sundew cultivators from Weil am Rhein, and provides the first experimental demonstration of fast-moving snap tentacles in sundew plants propelling prey into the plant's leaf trap, where they are captured and digested. The authors also provide a biophysical explanation for the quick motion of these touch-sensitive tentacles.

Glue-covered tentacles and leaf traps in sundew species work like flypaper to trap insects, but this is the first study to show how fast-acting 'snap' tentacles are involved in prey capture. The researchers found that insects walking on the snap tentacles trigger a touch-sensitive catapult action, propelling prey onto the nearby glue tentacles. Glue tentacles then gradually move the prey down to the leaf trap for digestion and assimilation.

This image shows how snap tentacles capture an insect.Credit: Citation: Poppinga S, Hartmeyer SRH, Seidel R, Masselter T, Hartmeyer I, et al. (2012) Catapulting Tentacles in a Sticky Carnivorous Plant. PLoS ONE 7(9): e45735. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0045735

The authors suggest that these catapulting snap tentacles could help increase the reach of a leaf trap beyond just the glue tentacles, and perhaps allow the plant to capture larger insects that may be strong enough to struggle free of the glue tentacles alone. Catapulting prey towards the center of the plant could also improve digestion of the insect and prevent theft of the captured prey by other predators.

"Such plants are of particular interest to plant biologists because of their sophisticated and complex structural and mechanical adaptations to carnivory", says Thomas Speck, lead author on the study.

Green Blog: Leopard Poaching on the Rise, Group Warns

When it comes to the poaching of endangered species, elephants, tigers and rhinos tend to be in the limelight. But a new report sets out to plug the information gap on a different species that is imperiled by a tide of demand related to rising affluence in Asia: leopards.

In India alone, an average of at least four leopards have been poached each week over the last 10 years, according to Traffic, an organization that monitors the trade in endangered wildlife around the globe and issued the report. That?s more than 2,000 in one decade.

The estimate is based on a review of seizures of spotted leopard skins and other body parts. While most of the items seized were skins, other body parts, particularly bones, are prescribed as substitutes for tiger parts in traditional Asian medicine, Traffic said.

?Even though reports of illegal trade in leopard body parts are disturbingly frequent, the level of threat to leopards in the country has previously been unrecognized and has fallen into our collective ?blind spot?,? said Rashid Raza, the lead author of the report, which was released on Friday in New Delhi.

There are no reliable estimates of how many leopards exist in India. The animals are notoriously wary of humans and are spread out over large areas, so tracking their numbers is difficult.

Yet the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, which categorizes leopards as ?near threatened? on its so-called red list of species, says that leopard populations have become extinct in some parts of the world and dwindled to tiny numbers in others. Although they dwell widely in the forests of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and China, they are ?becoming increasingly rare outside protected areas,? the organization says.

Divyabhanusinh Chavda, president of the World Wildlife Fund?s India chapter, said that concerted national action was needed. ?Without an effective strategy to assess and tackle the threats posed by illegal trade, the danger is that leopard numbers may decline rapidly, as happened previously to the tiger,? he said.

Government estimates put the number of tigers in India at little more than 1,700.

Check our Mountain Bike Gear Survey - The Backcountry Skiing Blog

I?m back at Western Washington University for the year, and as some of you know, I?m studying industrial design.

For our first assignment we?re doing a project with a local bike company (you have two guesses). First step is researching how people store equipment while mountain biking. Classmates and I made a short survey about what riders carry with them, etc. Although this is WildSnow, it?s still kinda summer (and we?re still riding around here), so I figured some of you might be interested. It would be a great help if you would fill out our survey (it?s super short, I promise). I?ll post the results in a week or so.

If the embeded survey below isn?t working, click here to get to the same survey.

The Hottest Celebrity Abs and Their Winning Workouts and Diets

Now that summer?s over, it?s time for a recap of this year?s hottest abs. These stars spill the favorite workout and diet tips they live by on a daily basis.

The Workout

We found that a majority of them were doing was some sort of weight resistance training. Why is this such a popular choice? It?s pretty simple actually. The more muscle the body has, the more fat it burns. And I don?t mean JUST during the workout either. After a good and hard weight resistance training session, the body will continue to burn calories hours after the workout is complete. (A great weight resistance exercise that hits the abdominals at the same time is heavy squat lifting.)

Something that may come as a shock to some of you is that only three of these stars admitted to incorporating specific cardio workouts into their plans. A lot of people make the mistake of either practicing only cardio or too much. Performing too much cardio puts the body into a state where it eventually begins to burn muscle. Due to the statement above, losing muscle is NOT something any of these celebrities feels like doing.

We also found that for those who involve outdoor activities in their weekly workouts are incorporating multiple forms so they?re getting a well rounded dose of exercise for the entire body. For example, if they were to only cycle, they?d get a killer leg workout but it?s also great to add in something like surfing because it requires full body endurance and?excellent?balance strength.

The Diet

When comparing the diets of the only two females who made the list, they had something very important in common. Both Megan and Jessica stick to an eating schedule. They?re eating the regular three (small) main meals a day with (small) snacks in between each one. The strategy is to keep the metabolism going. Think of your body as a funnel: it can only hold so much substance at one time, but it doesn?t take long for it to reach the bottom. When your body hasn?t eaten for three or more hours, it?s ready to be fed again because it?s finished absorbing what you last gave it. If it?s not fed, the body naturally goes into fat storage mode. This is why so many people don?t understand why they?re not losing weight even though they?re only eating once or twice a day.

As for the guys and their diets, it seems they?re focused on lean proteins, whole grains and veggies. This shouldn?t be any different for women. Looks like in this situation, it?s both quality AND quantity that matter.

The Supplements

Another great topic Megan touched on was how, despite her crazy schedule, she tries to keep up with her good eating habits. She admitted to taking fish oil supplements in order to make sure she?s still getting in her essential fats for the day. Yes, your body NEEDS fats? but the good kind. These may include things like peanut butter, natural oils, and avocado. A lot of women don?t get enough fat each day, which is why taking a simple pill like the fish oil supplement is a great solution.

In conclusion, these celebrity secrets aren?t really that much of a secret. They?re consistent with their workouts and they pay a decent amount of attention to their diet. None of them admitted to sitting on the floor for hours at a time doing hundreds of crunches. It?s an overall balance of?consistency?that does the trick.

Good Ways to Build Trust in a Relationship | MyTextspirationals.com

Building trust does not happen overnight nor does it involve unnecessary acts? of human altruism. Basically, building trust between you and your significant? other only involves communication and freedom. By providing such things, you and? your lover will definitely be in love for a very long time.

The First Step in Trusting Your Significant Other The first step in? building trust in a relationship is through giving freedom. Remember that your? significant other also needs some time to work or to be with his/her friends so? you need to trust him/her whenever he/she goes out every day. If you become? envious and untrusting then your significant other might also become paranoid? and he might leave you. So, remember to learn to trust and to give freedom to? your significant other.

Understand Each Other?s Needs Both you and your significant other? have certain needs which only friends and work will provide. We need friends in? order to have companionship and we need to work in order to earn money. Hence,? we often spend more time at work rather than at home. It is important for? significant others to trust each other when they?re away from each other at work? or out with friends. Sometimes, you go home late at night and your significant? other might be upset about your late schedule. Such things happen all the time? but if couples learn to trust each other and know that they cannot be together? all the time, they will be able to build trust.

Communication is Needed Communication is the key in a relationship.? If the couple knows when to communicate and how to thresh out the problems? inside the relationship they will be able to build trust. Talking about problems? can actually lead to stronger bonds. If one has to go out and party with? friends, a simple phone call or even a text message to the partner will suffice.? Remember, in order for any type of relationship to last it is important to keep? communication lines open.

Listening to Friends and Conscience You may fear that your? significant other is seeing someone else. Such things happen all the time? especially because of romantic movies and books. Some of your friends might even? try to persuade you that your significant other is cheating on you and you need? to break-up right away. In reality, believing such rumors might not be best for? your relationship. You need to understand that your friends are not perfect and? they might advise you to do things that are not in your best interest. They? might be saying things not based on facts but because of their past experiences? or preconceived notions. So, remember if you hear about such things, confront? your significant other and communicate any concerns you have with him/her.

Riverside Lucy and Coyote Bluff with explosive chances in the Grade A1 462 metres flat race

Trying their luck for the ?100 prize money of the Grade A1 462 metres flat race are Parkers Nemesis, Droopys Trump, Go Little Jeanie, Riverside Lucy, Dooey Three and Coyote Bluff. The 462 metres flat event will be hosted by Yarmouth on Wednesday, 26th September.

As far as the level of the race tonight is concerned, the most endearing entry is the two-year-old fawn bitch, Riverside Lucy. Ever since her Grade T1 race on 16th August, 2012 at Yarmouth, the J. A. White trained scored second twice, and then finally struck the third outing that followed.

Cashen Legend?s daughter won the Grade A1 Mattishall Youth FC on 15th September, 2012 at Yarmouth over 462 metres.

She had drawn the fourth tarp, and owing to the number, she opted to race in the middle. Taking command of the track from the first position had her making it to the other end of the wire in 27.87 seconds.

Her supremacy over the final 2 ? lengths had her shoving Dr Whizz into the second position.

The 3 to 1 candidate for the race tonight has been blessed with the same number once again. Experience and success over the same conditions makes her the best option for tonight.

She will be confronted by Headleys Bridge?s two-year-old black hound out of bitch, Kilcoran Duchess, Coyote Bluff.

He is beyond the potential that is required for the race tonight as he has already declared dominance at the open level of racing.

The K. Boon trained won the Grade A1 462 metres flat race on 29th August, 2012 at Yarmouth over 462 metres. He took flight from the fifth trap, drew clear quickly, switched to the wide end from middle, and remained prominent throughout the race.

It took him 27.98 seconds to race on the other end.

His way more significant achievement was in the Grade OR Stadium Bookmakers Standard ? Division A on 20th September, 2012 at Yarmouth over 462 metres.

Leading for almost half the way, and then resurfacing again from the third position had him roaring with success in 27.74 seconds.

He led the favourite entry, Boher Chieftain, by 4 ? lengths.

He is backed by 9 to 4 odds and will race from the sixth trap.

Bose SIE2i

Bose is no stranger to the earphone market, but until now, hasn't delivered an exercise-focused pair. The Bose SIE2i ($149.95 direct)??is moisture-proof, secure-fitting, and comes with an armband and inline controls for the iPhone. (The SIE2?without the "i"?skips the iPhone controls and is $30 less.) Audiophiles who generally regard Bose products as bass-heavy with a tweaked frequency response are not likely to change their minds based on the SIE2i, which has a notable focus on the low-mid frequencies. If you like a little extra bass response, as well as some added crispness for vocals, however, the SIE2i delivers this in a flashy, gym-friendly design, and it does so without distortion, even at top volumes.

Design
Similar to Bose's?IE2 earphones , the biggest difference with the SIE2i?are the bright orange or neon green color choices?eye-catching hues that probably aren't for everyone. A white and orange (or green, depending on the model) striped cable houses an inline microphone and iPhone controls for playback, volume control, track navigation, and answering calls.

One of the major differentiators between Bose's earphones and most other in-canal pairs is their slightly open design?Bose's earphones project sound not only toward the ear canal, but also outward a little, like open, on-ear headphones often do. The result is added spatial depth, but if you're looking for the SIE2i to passively block out noise like many in-canal pairs do, it doesn't seal off the ear canal well enough to achieve this.Bose SIE2i

Indeed, some people might be thrown off by the SIE2i's fit?while it's definitely secure, it has the slightly offputing quality of also feeling as though it is not completely in place because it doesn't quite seal off the ear canal. This would usually result in a lackluster bass response, but Bose has accounted for that, and the SIE2i has the typical Bose low-frequency boost, so this isn't an issue when it comes to audio performance.

The SIE2i comes with three pairs of silicon eartips?all of them have fins that help secure them in place. The cable for the SIE2i is intentionally short to keep it from bouncing around too much during strenuous exercise. It also has a shirt-clip to further aid its stability. Bose thoughtfully includes an extension cable for when you're using the earphones in a more-typical listening scenario.

A Reebok-designed armband is also included with the earphones, and it's more than meets the eye. The Velcro adjustable band has an inside pocket for keys, and proper holes for earphones and access to buttons. It should be noted that the armband is optimized for use with iPhone 4/4s models?the longer iPhone 5 is not a perfect fit. (Bose claims an updated armband to accommodate the iPhone 5 will be available later this year.) You'll also have to remove any case you normally use for the iPhone before sliding it inside the armband, but once inside, it is secure, and the screen is protected from moisture, but still completely visible and functional.?

Performance
Like most Bose earphones, the SIE2i offers a healthy dose of bass response, though things aren't exaggerated to the extent that they are with, say, any pair of Monster earphones. Bose tends to boost more of the low-mid range, which often highlights electric and acoustic bass parts, and focuses a bit less on sub-bass frequencies, though it does not ignore them.

At maximum volume, the SIE2i does not distort, even on challenging tracks with extremely deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." You get the feeling that just a smidge more volume would send the SIE2i's drivers over the edge and they would start crackling, but distortion is not an issue at any level.

Another typical Bose trait is to match the sculpted low-end response with some tweaks in high-mid frequencies and highs, generally with a focus on making vocals stand out. On the new Grizzly Bear record, Shields, the SIE2i makes Daniel Rossen's vocals stand out from the whirlwind of guitars, synths, and percussion. Generally speaking, the SIE2i does a great job with highlighting the exciting elements of most modern pop, rock, and hip hop, but audiophiles and purists will likely take issue with its far-from-flat-response approach to its output.

Still, on instrumental and classical tracks, such as "The Chairman Dances," by John Adams, the boost in the lows mainly serves to add a pleasant resonance to the lower register strings and deeper percussion, whereas many bass-boosted earphones, like the Monster iSport Immersion In-Ear Headphones?, tend to add so much sub-bass that classical pieces begin to sound unnatural. Of course, most people probably aren't listening to classical music at the gym, but some of us like to mix things up once in a while.

Call clarity is about what you'd expect from any earphone pair optimized for iPhone use?calls are clear enough, but the iPhone isn't known for its excellent call clarity, and the SIE2i can't do much to improve that.

If serious bass response in an exercise-friendly design is what you crave, the aforementioned Monster iSport Immersion earphones are a good bet?they feature a similar fin on the ear tip that helps stabilize them during exercise, and they definitely add more low-end oomph. If your primary concern is better overall balance, and perhaps saving a few bucks, the Sony XBA-S65??is a fine pair of affordable exercise earphones that offers a unique, very stable-fitting over-ear fin, despite being in-canal earphones.

Finally, if your ideal exercise pair would eliminate the cable altogether, check out some of our favorite gym-friendly Bluetooth-enabled options, like the Outdoor Technology DJ Slims ?and the Sennheiser MM 100 . For the price, however, Bose squeezes in quite a few accessories, including an exceptionally useful armband and an extension cable. The SIE2i's audio performance may not be for audiophiles, but it should please fans of modern music who happen to like a little extra presence in the lower frequencies without going overboard.

(AP) ? A factory in China owned by the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones resumed production Tuesday after a brawl by workers highlighted tensions that labor groups say were worsened by the pressure of a new iPhone launch.

Foxconn Technology Group and police said the cause of the unrest Sunday night was under investigation, but labor activists said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers. Foxconn and police said as many as 2,000 employees were involved in the brawl and 40 people were reported injured.

The iPhone 5 debuted last week in the United States and eight other countries and Apple has a three- to four-week backlog of online orders. Foxconn has declined to say whether its one-day suspension of production Monday in Taiyuan might affect supplies. It did not respond to a request for comment on the labor groups' claims.

News reports and witnesses said the violence Sunday night in Taiyuan in northern China stemmed from a confrontation between a factory worker and a guard that escalated. One employee reached by telephone said the violence was fueled by workers' anger about mistreatment by Foxconn security guards and managers.

"Foxconn, some supervisors, and security guards never respect us," said the employee, who asked not to be identified by name. "We all have this anger toward them and they (the workers) wanted to destroy things to release this anger."

Production at the Taiyuan factory resumed on Tuesday, Foxconn said in a written statement. It did not respond to a request for information on the status of its investigation or whether policies at the factory might be changed.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., is the world's biggest assembler of consumer electronics, with about 1.2 million workers in factories in Taiyuan, the southern city of Shenzhen, in Chengdu in the west and in Zhengzhou in central China. It makes iPhones and iPads for Apple and also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Labor activists say the need to ramp up iPhone 5 production has increased pressure on Foxconn employees.

"Because of the launch of the iPhone 5, the workload of workers suddenly surges," said a Hong Kong group, Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour, in a report this month. It said some employees interviewed at the Zhengzhou factory had not had a day off in the previous 30 days.

Foxconn has declined to say which products are made in each factory but another group, China Labor Watch, said the Taiyuan facility, which employs 79,000 people, is making the iPhone 5.

The group, based in New York City, complained that employees suffer "verbal and physical abuse" by guards.

"These workers must be treated with respect," it said in a statement. "And both Apple and Foxconn, with billions of dollars in profits every year, have both a legal and ethical obligation to uphold the rights of these workers."

Labor tensions in China have been aggravated by a slowing economy that is squeezing employers and a communist system that prohibits independent labor unions.

Many factories and other businesses have unions but they must be part of the state-sanctioned All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Workers complain leaders of local branches often are allied with management and fail to stand up for the workforce.

That means grievances over pay or other issues spiral into strikes and protests. In some cases, ACFTU representatives have scuffled with striking workers, trying to force them to return to work.

"They have no other way of voicing their grievances," said Geoffrey Crothall, communications director for China Labour Bulletin, a Hong Kong organization that promotes employee rights in China. "There are no formal channels of communication or ways of resolving grievances through peaceful negotiation."

Foxconn raised minimum pay and promised in March to limit hours after an auditor hired by Apple found Foxconn employees were regularly required to work more than 60 hours a week.

That review followed a rash of suicides at Foxconn facilities ? about a dozen since 2010 ? and an explosion at the iPad-making plant in Chengdu in May 2011 that killed four employees.

Foxconn's facilities are exceptionally large by the standards of a Chinese electronics industry in which most manufacturers employ hundreds or thousands of workers. Its flagship mainland factory in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, has 250,000 workers. The Chengdu site has 100,000 and the company has said the Zhengzhou factory might eventually employ 300,000.

Foxconn also has faced criticism in the past over the conduct of its security guards.

In 2010, Foxconn's parent, Hon Hai, pledged its guards would obey the law and refrain from using threats or harassment after a videotape showing several beating workers was circulated on the Internet.

Foxconn employees have complained about what some critics call "military-style management."

"Workers are expected to obey their manager at all times, not to question but simply do what they are told," said Crothall. "That atmosphere is not conducive to a happy or contented workforce. It's a very dehumanizing way of treating workers."

#ScratchGate: iPhone 5 Owners Are Discovering Aluminum Is Softer Than Glass

iphoneThe iPhone 5 hit stores last Friday. It's the lightest, thinnest, most sleek iPhone yet. But owners are quickly discovering that with those advantages, there are some inherent downsides. The slender iPhone 5 has an anodized aluminum backplate rather than one made of Corning glass as in the iPhone 4/4S. And since aluminum is a relatively soft material, the iPhone 5 shows more wear and tear than previous models. The iPhone 4 was a magnet for fingerprints. The iPhone 5 attracts scratches and scrapes nearly as easily.

Researchers call for specialty metals recycling

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? An international policy is needed for recycling scarce specialty metals that are critical in the production of consumer goods, according to Yale researchers in Science.

"A recycling rate of zero for specialty metals is alarming when we consider that their use is growing quickly," said co-author Barbara Reck, a research scientist at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Specialty metals, which include rare earth elements such as indium, gallium and germanium, account for more than 30 of the 60 metals in the periodic table. Because they are used in small amounts for very precise technological purposes, such as red phosphors, high-strength magnets, thin-film solar cells and computer chips, recovery can be so technologically and economically challenging that the attempt is seldom made.

"Specialty metals are used in products in only small amounts, but their value typically does not provide enough incentive to invest in a complicated recovery process. Also, the technology to do so is untested," said Thomas Graedel, the study's other co-author and Clifton R. Musser Professor of Industrial Ecology.

The researchers said improved design for recycling, deposits on consumer goods, recycling targets for specialty metals and financial incentives for industry to apply state-of-the-art separation techniques and recycling technologies would improve metal recycling.

"Metals are infinitely recyclable in principle, but, in practice, recycling is often inefficient or essentially nonexistent because of limits imposed by social behavior, product design, recycling technologies and the thermodynamics of separation," said Reck.

The researchers said that modern technology has produced a conundrum. The more intricate the product and the more diverse the materials it uses, the better it's likely to perform but the more difficult it is to recycle.

The benefit to recycling metals, they said, includes the potential to reduce the extraction of virgin ores, thus extending the life of those resources. The environmental impacts of metal production are reduced substantially when recycled materials, rather than primary materials, are used, and recycling a metal is generally much more energy-efficient than acquiring it from a mine.

"Depending on the metal and the form of scrap, recycling can save as much as a factor of 10 or 20 in energy consumption," Graedel said. "The situation clearly calls for international policy initiatives to minimize the seemingly bizarre situation of spending large amounts of technology, time, energy and money to acquire scarce metals from the mines and then throwing them away after a single use."

Nepal avalanche hit climbers as they were sleeping

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? Mountaineers who survived a pre-dawn avalanche high on the world's eighth-tallest peak say they waited an hour for sunlight, and then saw pieces of tents and bodies of victims strewn around them on the snow.

Veteran Italian climber Silvio Mondinelli said he and a fellow mountaineer were asleep when they heard a violent sound and felt their tent start to slide.

"It was only a few seconds and we did not know what happened, but we had slid more than 200 meters (650 feet)," Mondinelli told The Associated Press on Monday. "All we wanted was for it to stop."

The avalanche hit at about 4 a.m. Sunday while more than two dozen climbers were sleeping in their tents at Camp 3 on Mount Manaslu in northern Nepal.

At least nine climbers were killed and six are believed still missing.

Helicopters flew over the slopes on Monday to search for the missing mountaineers as climbers and guides searched the slopes on foot. Rescuers brought down eight bodies ? four French, one German, one Italian, one Spaniard and one Nepali guide ? and were trying to retrieve the ninth from the 7,000-meter (22,960-foot) area where the avalanche struck, police Chief Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said.

Ten climbers survived, but many of them were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters.

Three French climbers and two Germans were transported to hospitals in Katmandu on Sunday. Two Italians were flown there on Monday ? Mondinelli, who has climbed the world's 14 highest peaks, and fellow mountaineer Christian Gobbi.

Mondinelli said another Italian climber and their Sherpa guide were sleeping in another tent and were buried by the avalanche and died.

Gobbi said they could not see at first when they looked out of their torn tent because it was pitch dark and they had no light.

"We found someone's boots and put them on," he said.

When the sun rose an hour later, they saw parts of tents scattered across the snow, along with people who had been killed or injured.

They said they were able to assist the injured with the help of Sherpa guides who came from lower camps. Those who could walk made their way down to the base camp while those who were injured were picked up by helicopters.

Italian, German and French teams were on the mountain, with a total of 231 climbers and guides, but not all were at the higher camps hit by the avalanche.

Nepal Mountaineering Department chief Balkrishan Ghimire identified the eight recovered bodies as Fabrice Priez, Philippe Lucien Bos, Catherine Marie Andree Richard and Ludovic Paul Nicolas Challeat of France; German Christian Mittermeyer; Italian Alberto Magliano; Spaniard Marti Roirg Gasull; and Nepali Dawa Dorji.

Sunday's avalanche came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable. Spring is a more popular mountaineering season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the high Himalayan peaks.

Mount Manaslu is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high and has attracted more climbers recently because it is considered one of the easier peaks to climb among the world's tallest mountains.

Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have complained in recent years that conditions on the mountains have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased, with some laying the blame on global warming.

Avalanches are not very frequent on Mount Manaslu, but in 1972 one struck a team of climbers and killed six Koreans and 10 Nepalese guides.

Ang Tshering of the Asian Trekking agency in Katmandu, who has equipped hundreds of expeditions, said low snow levels and the increased number of climbers on Manaslu have made climbing conditions difficult.

"It used to be a low-risk mountain in the past but now that has all changed," Tshering said, adding that conditions have become more unpredictable.
