A Home Tour at Marsha's - byfioket's Space - Posterous

Marsha Merry Christmas

?I always like visiting better after Christmas,? said friend Marsha. ? After thinking about it, I do agree. ?The pressure is gone, and one can relax and enjoy being with ones you love. That is when Marsha invited me over for coffee, and I was beyond excited. ?I jumped at the invitation, and offered to bring some Hungarian Butterhorns. ?It is always a joy and a pleasure to visit Marsha. ?I call her my cheerleader. ?She encourages me, writes better comments than I do blogs, and promotes Lanabird. ?Words can not express how thankful I am to her.

Not only is she a totally wonderful person, she has a beyond wonderful home. ?I took pictures so you can visit also.

Be still my heart! ?For years I have admired English chimney pots, and look what greeted me at the front door. ?Filled with oversized ornaments, it is festive and fantastic.

The painted wardrobe from Germany is breathtaking. ?I like it. I love it. ?I do believe it is the prettiest one I have ever seen.

Beyond fantastic are the three wise men on her mantle. ?Marsha said she got them years ago at The Market at North Park. ?I love it that the camels are wearing the crowns.

Looking from her dining room into the den, you can get a sense of how beautiful her home is. ?Isn?t that the most gorgeous antique chandelier?

Be still my heart! ? ?The antique turkey platter takes my breath away. ?It was from Bob?s (Marsha?s husband) family. ? ?Most of the antiques in her home are family heirlooms.

Mercury glass, a mirrored tray, and glittery silver trees are beautiful on the sofa table.

Next to the sofa table is a darling little chair holding a lit tree. ?How cute is that!

I love, love, love, this blue and ?white platter filled with candy canes and red and white glass balls.

Gorgeous ? just gorgeous. ?Marsha had a beautiful antique bowl filled with large pine cones and silver stars.

Marsha and Bob added on a large room on the back of their home. ?It is perfect for entertaining. ?Love the leaded glass side windows (I know they have a name, but I do not know the name.)

Guarding the back door is the most adorable snowman in an antique cart. ?He was handmade by a lady in McKinney.

In several places in her home, Marsha used architectural pieces above mirrors, pictures, and doors. ?The details in her home are amazing.

In the living room there was another small lit tree. ?What a wonderful look.

Sweet Mother of Pearl. ?On the side table, is the happiest Holy Family I have ever seen. ?The smile on Mary and Baby Jesus make me smile. ?I know Joseph is smiling under his beard. ?This reminds me of Marsha. ?She is always happy and smiling. ?Marshachristmas is how she is known on the comment page, and I must say she is a gift to all who know her.

Honestly it was hard for me to leave because I kept seeing more and more unusual things. ?The little tree on the right with the fruit was Bob?s mothers ? probably from the 1940?s. ?I love it, and I love that they still have it.

Amazing! ?Marsha even has a Crawford biscuit tin.

Marsha and Bob are one of the most loved and respected couples I have ever known. ?Thank you for letting me share your home. ?I had such a good time visiting with you, and eating your delicious pimento cheese sandwiches. ?I know I missed many things. ?Your home is truly wonderful.

Blessings to you and yours,

?

More marketing tips for writers from Chuck Sambuchino's new book ...

(A quick note: ?I?ll be posting on?Drawing on the Power of Resonance in Writing, by David Farland, sometime early next week. If there?s a book you?re interested in learning about but don?t have the means to peruse yourself, please let me know. I?ll see what I can do about it.)

In the second section of Create Your Writer Platform: The Key to Building an Audience, Selling More Books, and Finding Success as an Author, author Chuck Sambuchino said writers should do two things right away: create a web site, and start using a few different ways to build a platform.

Web sites was discussed in detail at the beginning of the section. My first question was?can my WordPress blog count as a web site? That was answered in one sentence:

?Know that, by web site, I do not mean merely a blog.

I felt chagrined for a moment, until I read the following:

That said, if you have nowhere to turn to, just use WordPress?simple software that will guide you through creating a web site or blog or both.

If I understand right, one the advantages of a web site is a static landing page (compared to the fluid landing page of a blog).? There should be an ?about me? page with a short bio?not a long one, if you?re just starting out?and a head shot. A page listing your books or showcasing your portfolio is a good idea, and a ?contact me? page is essential.

Sambuchino spends an entire two pages discussing your head shot.

??You?ll need it for your website and interviews and lots of other places?and sooner is better for having it done because you ain?t getting any younger.?

He?s not kidding. That?s probably what makes me feel so shy about it.

His notes on bios are to keep them short:

Over the years, I?ve noticed that long bios can actually hurt you. The more things you sell/mention (i.e., the more you stuff into a small space), the thinner everything becomes.

An entire chapter is devoted to blogging. Surprisingly, my favorite advice from that chapter is to avoid posts that are too personal or boring. Who doesn?t like to write about their personal life? I know I do. Since I work at home, it?s sometimes difficult to separate my work life from my home life, and I?m pretty sure that shows here.

Like Godin, Sambuchino suggests spending a significant amount of time on each blog post headline. At least five minutes per headline, he said?which can be difficult to do when your mind is bursting with thoughts for the next post.

The last portion of this section (Chapters Nine through Thirteen) deal with the optional things you can do to build your platform. They include:

  • Starting an e-newsletter
  • Article and column writing
  • Public speaking
  • Using social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, effectively
  • Side doors to Platform

There?s just too much in those sections to write about, and there?s more to do than can possibly be done here. I sincerely appreciate Sambuchino?s advice at the beginning of this section, when he says you shouldn?t try to do everything.

You should not dive in everywhere. That?s right. I am officially telling you not to tackle every opportunity or go down every path.

Nice, isn?t it, to know there are so many options out there? And that you?re free not to use them, if you so choose?

This section of reading has left me with three questions for my fellow bloggers:

  1. Has anyone reading this used WordPress to generate a web site? I?m intrigued. Is that different than what I?ve done with my blog?
  2. Does the idea of having a head shot here make anyone else feel shy?
  3. Who has experience with public speaking? What did you speak about, and what was it like?

I?m looking forward to your replies!

Due to a sick baby, this was as far as I read in Chuck Sambuchino?s book. I?ll be finishing it this afternoon, but this is as far as I plan to post. The final section is filled with case studies of authors who have been through what Sambuchino writes about in this book.?I recommend buying the book and keeping it on hand for future reference.

Honour for Higgs boson physicist

Physicist Peter Higgs, after whom the Higgs boson particle is named, has been recognised in the New Year Honours.

In the 1960s, Prof Higgs and other physicists proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.

The mechanism predicts the existence of a Higgs particle, the discovery of which was claimed this year at the Large Hadron Collider.

Prof Higgs has been made a Companion of Honour.

The recognition confers no title but is restricted to a select group of 65 for achievements in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry, or religion.

His discovery announced in July this year of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson immediately led to calls for the 83-year-old to be knighted.

He is now also considered to be a candidate for a Nobel prize, perhaps in conjunction with other physicists who reached similar conclusions at the same time.

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Higgs was inspired at school by the work of physicist Paul Dirac, who helped lay the foundations of quantum mechanics and predicted the existence of antimatter.

After obtaining his PhD from King's College London, he held academic positions at the University of Edinburgh and then London before returning to the Edinburgh to lecture at the Tait Institute of Mathematical Physics.

According to one popular version of the story, Prof Higgs came up with the concept during a walk in the Cairngorms. But in an interview earlier this year, he told BBC News that there was no "eureka moment".

Best explanation of Higgs boson? Continue reading the main story

The Higgs mechanism explains why the building blocks known as elementary particles have mass. According to the idea, these particles acquire mass through their interaction with a field that permeates space.

The theory predicts the existence of a new particle, which also carries Prof Higgs' name. But six physicists - including Higgs - are now generally credited with the formulation of the concept.

The idea initiated a decades-long effort to detect the particle in experiments. However, it remained elusive until this year, when scientists at the $10bn LHC particle smasher announced that they had found a particle consistent with the Higgs boson.

The probable discovery added a final missing piece to the framework known as the Standard Model, which stands as the most widely accepted theory to explain how particles of matter interact.

At the time of the announcement, Prof Higgs told reporters: "It's very nice to be right sometimes."

He added: "At the beginning I had no idea whether a discovery would be made in my lifetime because we knew so little at the beginning about where this particle might be in mass, and therefore how high an energy machine would have to go before it could be discovered.

"It's been a long wait but it might have been even longer, I might not have been still around."

Shortly after the boson news this year, Edinburgh University, where Higgs is an emeritus professor, announced a new centre that would carry his name. The Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics will be housed at the university's James Clerk Maxwell Building.

The particle earned a nickname - the "God particle" - supposedly because of its importance to the Standard Model. But Prof Higgs stated that he disliked the term because it "might offend people who are religious".

This week, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Prof Higgs criticised fellow academic - and staunch atheist - Richard Dawkins for his stance towards religious believers.

Prof Higgs said: "What Dawkins does too often is to concentrate his attack on fundamentalists. But there are many believers who are not fundamentalists. Fundamentalism is another problem. I mean, Dawkins in a way is almost a fundamentalist."

Also honoured are Sue Gibson, professor of chemistry at Imperial College London, who is becomes an OBE; Prof Richard Holdaway, director of RAL Space, which helps co-ordinate civil space activities, who becomes a CBE; and Carol Vivien Robinson, professor of chemistry at the University of Oxford, who is made a Dame.

Americans from Central African Republic capital evacuated

Reuters

Hundreds protest in front of the French Embassy in the Bangui, Central African Republic, on Wednesday, expressing anger over the lack of response by the former colonial power to rebels advancing on the capital.

?

By NBC News and wire services

U.S. diplomats and other American citizens have been evacuated from the Central African Republic and U.S. embassy operations have been suspended in the capital, Bangui, the State Department said Thursday. The move came as?rebel forces?advanced on the city.

"This decision is solely due to concerns about the security of our personnel and has no relation to our continuing and long-standing diplomatic relations with the (Central African Republic)," said State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell.

Insurgents on motorbikes and in pickup trucks have driven to within 45 miles of Bangui after weeks of fighting, threatening to end President Francois Bozize's nearly 10-year rule over the turbulent, resource-rich country.

Bozize appealed to the United States and France to help push back the rebels.

Some U.S. Special Forces are operating in the country, trying to track down the Lords Resistance Army, a rebel group responsible for killing thousands of civilians across four African nations.?There was no indication that these forces would be used to aid Bozize against the advancing insurgents.

Earlier a senior defense official told NBC News that there were "several hundred" civilians, including Americans and citizens of close U.S. allies who may be evacuated, but comments by the State Department's Ventrell suggested fewer had left:?

"Ambassador (Laurence) Wohlers and his diplomatic team left Bangui today along with several private U.S. citizens," according to Ventrell.

The non-combatant evacuation operation transported "U.S. citizens and designated foreign nationals to safe havens in the region," according to a statement from?Defense Department spokesman Todd Breasseale. The flight out of Bangui was "wheels up" at about 7:15 p.m. ET.?

Paris said its troops would protect French nationals, but not be involved in repelling the rebels.?

Some 1,200 French nationals live in the CAR, mostly in the capital, according to the French Foreign Ministry, where they typically work for mining firms or aid groups.

French nuclear energy group Areva mines the Bakouma uranium deposit in the CAR's south ? France's biggest commercial interest in its former colony.?

Bozize on Thursday appealed for French and U.S. military support to stop the SELEKA rebel coalition, which has promised to overthrow him unless he implements a previous peace deal in full.

France: 'Those days are over'
He told a crowd of anti-rebel protesters in the riverside capital that he had asked Paris and Washington to help move the rebels away from the capital to clear the way for peace talks which regional leaders say could be held soon in Libreville, Gabon.

"We are asking our cousins the French and the United States, which are major powers, to help us push back the rebels to their initial positions in a way that will permit talks in Libreville to resolve this crisis," Bozize said.

Central African Republic President Francois Bozize in 2008.

France has 250 soldiers in its landlocked former colony as part of a peacekeeping mission and Paris in the past has ousted or propped up governments ? including by using air strikes to defend Bozize against rebels in 2006.

But French President Francois Hollande poured cold water on the latest request for help.

"If we have a presence, it's not to protect a regime, it's to protect our nationals and our interests and in no way to intervene in the internal business of a country, in this case the Central African Republic," Hollande said on the sidelines of a visit to a wholesale food market outside Paris.

"Those days are over," he said.

France is increasingly reluctant to directly intervene in conflicts in its former colonies. Since coming to power in May, Hollande has promised to put ties with its former colonies on a healthier footing.

The rebel advance has highlighted the instability of a country that has remained poor since independence from Paris in 1960 despite rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds. Average income is barely over $2 a day.

Regional African leaders, meantime, tried to broker a ceasefire deal and rebels said they had temporarily halted their advance on Bangui to allow talks to take place.

Officials from around central Africa were to meet in Bangui later on Thursday to open initial talks with the government and rebels.

A rebel spokesman said fighters had temporarily halted their advance to allow dialogue.

"We will not enter Bangui," Col. Djouma Narkoyo, the rebel spokesman, told Reuters by telephone.

Previous rebel promises to stop advancing have been broken, and a diplomatic source said rebels had taken up positions around Bangui on Thursday, effectively surrounding it.

The atmosphere remained tense in Bangui the day after anti-rebel protests broke out, and residents were stocking up on food and water.

Government soldiers deployed at strategic sites and French troops reinforced security at the French embassy after protesters threw rocks at the building on Wednesday.

Bozize came to power in a 2003 rebellion that overthrew President Ange-Felix Patasse.

The government holds little sway outside the capital, and in some parts of the country, the consequences of conflicts in troubled neighbors Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo have spilled over.

Asus S46CA-XH51

Small business owners looking for an affordably priced ultrabook with some design oomph will find more than a few things to like about the Asus S46CA-XH51 ($779 list). It's a handsomely designed Windows 7-equipped ultrabook that comes equipped with a built-in DVD burner, USB 3.0 connectivity, and a full-size HDMI port. Unfortunately, its so-so performance ultimately dilutes its potency as a portable solution for small businesses.

Design and Features
The S46CA-XH51 is a fairly compact system whose chassis measures 1.2 by 13.7 by 9.6 inches (HWD). At 4.35 pounds, it's still easy to carry around even though it veers towards the heavier end of the ultrabook spectrum, outweighing both the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2.93 pounds) and the Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 (3.6 pounds).

At any rate, the S46CA-XH51 is unquestionably an attractively designed system. Its aluminum chassis sports a brushed two-tone finish, with an elegant grey palmrest that's complemented by the system's black lid. From a practical perspective, the aluminum construction makes for a durable system that can withstand its share of bumps and bruises when taken on the go.

The S46CA-XH51's raised tile keyboard is outfitted with black chiclet-style keys that create a nice visual contrast to the grey palmrest. The keyboard is surprisingly comfortable to type on since it manages to sidestep the shallow key travel that so often plagues systems with markedly thin profiles. With so much to like about the keyboard, then, its absence of a backlight comes as something of a disappointment since it's an easily avoidable shortcoming that mars an otherwise well-designed keyboard. Likewise, the S46CA-XH51's smooth and responsive touchpad provides a good amount of tactile feedback for two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming, with left- and right- click buttons that don't exhibit any unappealing clackiness.

With a maximum resolution of 1,366 by 768, the S46CA-XH51's 14.1-inch LED display doesn't reach the soaring 1080P heights of the Lenovo X1 Carbon's display, but its glossy finish and bright colors nonetheless make it easy on the eyes. Bright colors and crisp text alike pop off the screen, and movies look great in 720P resolution. The latter point is especially relevant since the S46CA-XH51 manages to squeeze a DVD burner into its chassis despite its thin profile. This is a rarity in the ultrabook world ? none of the other systems in the S46CA-XH51's class sport such a feature - and even for users that have supposedly sworn off optical media, there's a certain sense of comfort one can derive from knowing that they'll never need to purchase an external drive (assuming, of course, they don't intend on using Blu-rays).

The S46CA-XH51's speakers are housed in a horizontal grille directly beneath the display, and Asus SonicMaster Lite software provides a software-driven boost to make the volume loud enough for a few folks in a small room. Testing these speakers out with "Silent Shout" by the Knife, I was pleased with how loud they belted out sound without sounding tinny, though the subdued levels of bass left something to be desired.

Typical of its ultrabook brethren, port selection on the S46CA-XH51 is a bit skimpy. Like the Toshiba U845-S406 and the Lenovo X1 Carbon, the S46CA-XH51 only features a single USB 3.0 port, which is located on the left side of the system beside an RJ45 port, a VGA port, and a full-size HDMI output. The latter is a good touch since it sidesteps the need to fuss with dongles and the like when connecting the S46CA-XH51 to a larger display. That said, though, the S46CA-XH51 doesn't feature Intel's Wireless Display technology, so be sure to have an HDMI cable ready. Meanwhile, the front side of the S46CA-XH51 features an SD card reader, and the right side houses the S46CA-XH51's tray-loading DVD burner, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, and a headphone/microphone combo jack.

The S46CA-XH51 packs a moderately spacious 500GB 5,400RPM HDD and a 24GB SSD, a one-two punch that delivers storage capacity without compromising quickness since the latter works in the background to help speed up functions like booting, loading frequently used apps, and waking the system from sleep. The 500GB drive comes preloaded with Windows 7 Professional as well as a decent amount of additional software of varying utility. Some of it is useful, like Adobe Reader 10, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a CyberLink burning suite. Additionally, there's also some trialware (McAfee Anti-Virus), a hefty portion of proprietary software (Asus Media Suite, Asus Power4Gear, Asus Vibe 2.0) and, of course, unnecessary bloatware (Bing Bar, Windows Live Essentials). The S46CA-XH51 is covered by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
Asus S46CA-XH51 The S46CA-XH51 packs a dual-core 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U processor, and coupled with 4GB RAM, it yielded average (and somewhat unremarkable) scores on our benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,628 points landed at the bottom of the pack, falling short of the Sony VAIO T13 (SVT13114GXS) (3,403 points) and coming nowhere near the Lenovo X1 Carbon (5,149 points) or the class-leading HP Envy Spectre XT 13-2050nr (5,425 points).

The S46CA-XH51 fared somewhat better on our multimedia tests, where it proved to be a system that, while better suited for multimedia consumption, nevertheless has the capacity for light media creation. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 2 minutes 3 seconds, falling a mere two seconds behind the Sony VAIO T13 (2:01) and only six seconds short of both the Toshiba U845-S406 and the HP XT 13-2050nr (1:57 each). On the other hand, the S46CA-XH51's Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.36 points edged past the Lenovo X1 Carbon (2.25 points) and came within striking distance of both the Toshiba U845-S406 and HP XT 13-2050nr (2.41 points each). Although the 4 minutes 45 seconds it took the S46CA-XH51 to complete our Photoshop CS5 test was not nearly as brisk as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (4:18), it nonetheless nipped at the heels of the Sony VAIO T13 (4:35) and the HP XT 13-2050nr (4:34).

Asus S46CA-XH51

Similarly, the S46CA-XH51 landed toward the bottom of the pack when it came to 3D rendering. Its 3DMark 06 scores (4,508 points at medium-detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 2,446 points at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing) fell short of the Lenovo X1 Carbon (4,560 points and 3,376 points, respectively) and, to a greater extent, both the Toshiba U845-S406 (5,792 points and 3,278 points, respectively) and HP XT 13-2050nr (5,908 points and 3,256 points, respectively).

The S46CA-XH51 sports an integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU, so it came as no surprise that it, too, failed to crack the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in visually demanding 3D games. Its performance in our Crysis benchmark test (18 fps with medium-quality settings) was on equal footing with that of the Lenovo X1 Carbon and the Sony VAIO T13 (18fps, each) and only slightly behind that of the HP XT 13-2050nr (21fps). Similarly, while the S46CA-XH51's performance in our Lost Planet 2 tests (15fps in medium quality, 5fps in high quality) outgunned the Lenovo X1 Carbon (13fps and 5fps, respectively) and was nearly identical with both the Sony VAIO T13 (16fps and 7fps, respectively) and HP XT 13-2050nr (20fps and 10fps, respectively), the distinctions are meaningless since none were able to deliver frame rates that would be considered playable.

The S46CA-XH51's removable 44Whr battery lasted 5 hours 7 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test, which is longer than the Satellite U845-S406 (5:02), although this isn't an entirely reliable point of comparison since the latter's battery life was tested with a video rundown test. At any rate, the S46CA-XH51's battery life was roughly three hours shorter than those of its competitors, with the Sony VAIO T13 (7:09), Lenovo X1 Carbon (7:19), and HP XT 13-2050nr (7:32) each managing to cross the seven-hour mark. If you're a road warrior whose career entails data-crunching on the road, this means that you won't be able to last through an entire workday on a single charge, so if finding an available power outlet strikes you as an unfeasible or unpalatable endeavor, then the S46CA-XH51 may not be your ideal road companion.

There's plenty to like about the Asus S46CA-XH51, including its handsome design, built-in optical drive, and reasonable price. Alas, however, its so-so performance dilutes its potency as a sure-fire portable solution for small businesses. That's why the Lenovo X1 Carbon's higher price tag and status as our Editors' Choice for business ultrabooks both remain justified. If design and affordability outweigh performance on your list, though, it's worth looking into.

The Yeshiva World Netanyahu, Jordan's Abdullah Secretly Meet To ...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has secretly met Jordan?s King Abdullah in Amman to discuss the risk of Syria?s chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants, Israeli media reports said on Wednesday.

Two TV stations and Israeli news sites quoted unnamed Israeli officials confirming a report in the London-based Arabic language daily, Al-Quds Al-Arabi, that such a summit had been held. Netanyahu?s spokesmen have declined to comment on the reports.

As Syria?s southern neighbour, Israel has been concerned about the risk of President Bashar al-Assad?s chemical weapons falling into the hands of Islamist militants or Lebanese Hezbollah fighters as an uprising against him convulses a country thought to possess a formidable chemical arsenal.

Israel has warned it could intervene if it felt there was a real risk of such a scenario unfolding.

Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 and meetings between their leaders are not unusual and are often announced by both sides.

Israel?s Channel 2 said the latest talks included a ?very long discussion? about ?cooperation with Jordan with regard to the fate of Syria?s chemical weapons?. It did not elaborate.

Israeli Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon on Tuesday dismissed reports that Syrian government forces had fired chemical agents at rebels fighting to topple Assad?s government.

?As things stand now, we do not have any confirmation or proof that (chemical weapons) have already been used, but we are definitely following events with concern,? Yaalon said on Israel?s Army Radio.

Pakistan to play full series in West Indies in July 2013 ? Cricket News Update

With the Pakistan Cricket Board hoping to host India in the return leg of the bilateral series in August next year, the PCB has convinced its West Indies counterparts to play a full series in July rather than splitting the national team?s scheduled trip to the Caribbean.

The Pakistan cricket team was initially scheduled to tour West Indies in June and July next year. But the itinerary had ran into trouble when the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) requested its Pakistan counterparts to postpone the series by few weeks, as they wanted to host India and Sri Lanka in a short triangular one-day series, also in July.

Last week, it was reported that the PCB and WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) were contemplating over dividing the scheduled itinerary into two legs in a bid to allow the former to create a window for a home series against the archrivals India in August.

However, the sources from inside the Pakistan Cricket Board, on Wednesday confirmed that the Men in Green will now be travelling to the West Indies in July 2013 as planned to play a full-fledged series, comprising two Tests, five One Day Internationals and a one-off T20 International fixture.

"The problem is now sorted out and our team will be touring (West Indies) in July as planned earlier," a source told media reporters yesterday.

"Pakistan is very hopeful and keen that India can be convinced to come to Pakistan because India have made it clear it does not have a policy of playing any bilateral series in a third country," the source added further.

The sub-continental cricketing giants have recently resumed bilateral cricketing ties after a gap of more than five years, with the Pakistan players touring India for a short-limited overs series, and the Pakistan Cricket Board is hoping to invite the India cricketers for a return leg of the bilateral series in late 2013.

"Since bilateral ties have resumed after five years (as India and Pakistan are playing each other currently in India) and presently there is lot of positivity in relations between the two boards, there is a good chance that India might listen to the suggestion of playing in August," another source said.

It may be noted here that Pakistan have not hosted an international cricket game since March 2009, when the on-tour Sri Lankan cricket team?s bus was attacked by militants in Lahore.

5 stores with great return policies

21 hrs.

What makes a great return policy?

Enough time to get that mistake back to the store? Recouping your money without having to dig through a pile of receipts? Receiving that return in whatever form is most convenient for you? And, if you're buying online, how about free return shipping?

These days, with a lot of merchants, you have to pick and choose which points are most important to you. When it comes to returns, very few retailers offer it all.

Some stores might give a full return within a certain window of time -- but you need a real receipt, not a gift receipt. Others have a very short time window but might not require much paperwork. And some are lenient on time but might limit you to a store gift card.

Don't forget that rules can also change depending on what you bought or how you paid for it. And a handful of stores also assess those pesky restocking fees.

It's enough to make even a veteran shopper dizzy.

During the holidays though, many of the major retailers will offer more liberal return policies, says Teri Gault, co-author of "Shop Smart, Save More."

Here, in no particular order, are five stores that are earning a reputation for making returns easy.

Nordstrom
The return policy is that there is no return policy, says Colin Johnson, spokesman for Nordstrom. "You won't find one posted at the cash register or on your receipt. We're just going to stand behind our merchandise. The bottom line is that we work with the customer."

The highlights to this kind of thinking for a consumer are that there's no time limit, no receipt required and no paperwork. And you get treated the same whether you have a gift receipt or purchase receipt.

If you bought online from Nordstrom.com, the store provides free return shipping, he says. Or you can take the item back to a local store.

"The way it works is we ask our people in the stores to use good judgment," Johnson says. "The ultimate objective is taking care of the customer. It really depends on the situation. You really can't have a rule book that takes into account every scenario."

The chain's discount store, Nordstrom Rack, operates a little differently with respect to returns because items come from closeouts and special purchases, says Johnson. There, you'll have 30 days to return items, and receipts and tags are preferred, he says.

Bottom line, Johnson says, is that employees "try to remove the clutter -- the policy-type stuff that can get in the way of taking care of the customer."

Zappos.com
You'd think an online shoe store would be a tough sell, since shoes are all about fit.

But Zappos.com has built a business around making returns easy so that customers can order several pairs, try them on and ship back the ones that don't work. As a result, the retailer is as famous for its return policy as it is for its shoes.

"The return policy for Zappos.com is if you're not 100 percent satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund," says Corey Schreiber, content developer for Zappos Insights.

The highlights to Zappos.com's policy are that you have one year to return merchandise. Because you're shopping online (and orders are tracked), you never need a receipt. Shipping is free for orders and returns. And for returns, you can print out shipping labels at the Zappos site, or the company will email or snail mail them to you, he says.

One cool feature is the company's "advanced exchange." If you need a different size or color, the company will ship it to you for free. All you have to do is send back the first item within the next two weeks, he says. All the shipping is free, and you don't have to worry about carrying two items on your credit or debit account.

"We use it as a 'wow' tool," says Schreiber.

L.L. Bean
Just what every consumer needs: No time limits and no receipts required.

If you bought online from L.L.Bean, you can return the merchandise to your local store, or you can send the item back using prepaid labels you can print from the site.

It's all part of the Maine-based retailer's "100 percent satisfaction guarantee," says Carolyn Beem, an L.L.Bean spokeswoman. "We are one of the few companies out there that lets the customer define what 'satisfaction' is," she says.

Return shipping is $6.50 (deducted from your refund) or free if you have an L.L.Bean credit card or are sending back the item because it's defective, she says.

During the lifetime of a product, if you find you're not happy, "We encourage you to return it for a refund, store credit or replacement," Beem says.

"It's a pretty simple policy," she says.

Costco
Membership club Costco is another retailer trying to make returns easy.

Shoppers are members who pay fees to join, so "We will refund in full at any time (if) a member is dissatisfied," says Franz Lazarus, an executive vice president with Costco. Members generally get the refund in the same form they paid, while nonmembers would likely get cash or store gift cards, he says.

With consumer electronics, which tend to have a shelf life, there is a 90-day window to return, he says. "That's the only exception."

And that's been the only change to the return policy over the years, says Lazarus. "We felt at one point several years ago that we had to initiate that because technology was changing so rapidly."

You also don't have to have a receipt, he says. "(While) we like for there to be a receipt because it makes the process easier, we would not refuse a refund because there was no receipt."

Buying online? "Anything that's purchased online can be returned to one of our locations," he says. And return shipping is free.

Target
If you paid via credit card, debit card, gift card or check, the store can track your purchase and refund the full amount without a receipt, says Jessica Deede, spokeswoman for the retailer.

The store's return window is 90 days. The one exception is consumer electronics, which have a 30-day return window.

Target even offers shoppers a generous "gift" during holiday time. For holiday purchases (anything bought in November or before Dec. 24), that 30-day clock doesn't start until Dec. 26, she says. That way shoppers "don't have to hold off or wait," to buy, Deede says.

With the actual receipt (or searchable purchase record), you'll get all of your money back. If you have a gift receipt, you'll get a gift card or exchange, she says.

If you paid by check, consult a calendar. If it's been less than seven days, you could be offered cash or a gift card, says Deede. But if the store has had at least a week to clear the check, then you'll get a cash refund, she says.

Buying online? Most products can be returned to your local store, says Deede. (To be sure check the "shipping & returns" tab before you buy, she advises.)

And if you want (or need) to ship it back, shipping costs are deducted from your return, says Deede.

The Importance Of Small Business In International Agricultural Trade ...

It is important to include small businesses and farmers in international agricultural trade. (wattpublishing, Creative Commons)

It is important to include small businesses and farmers in international agricultural trade. (wattpublishing, Creative Commons)

We say we live in a globalized economy, in which the actions of one country affect another, but in which we also work together.?For a globalized economy to work efficiently, each country must contribute to the "give and take" exchange between countries. However, we need to realize that not all countries have the same things to offer. Given these differences, we have to come up with the best exchange programs between countries to make globalization work efficiently.

When we look at the current issue of hunger around the world, it seems that countries are leading with the "take" approach rather than the "give" approach. According to Global Issues, a research-based organization that provides information to people around the world, currently "over 9 million people die worldwide each year because of hunger and malnutrition"; out of this nine million, five million are children. ?"Approximately 1.2 billion people suffer from hunger (deficiency of calories and protein)"; to top this, food wastage rates are high. In the United Kingdom, "30-40% of all food is never eaten"; in the U.S., "40-50% of all food ready for harvest never gets eaten." Some countries are essentially wasting food while citizens in other countries are living in poverty and dying due to a lack of food.

To change this dichotomy, I suggest that we change the way we trade food. We need to give opportunities to small businesses and farmers to trade internationally. Currently, agricultural trade is set up within an international framework that makes it hard for small farmers and businesses to be involved on a large scale. International organizations, such as the World Bank and the World Trade Organization, set high parameters for trade to develop for smaller businesses. Because huge agro-industrial sectors dominate the agricultural fields of research and technology, smaller businesses choose not to invest, and farmers do not have adequate capital to invest.

This monopolized structure to food trade likewise makes it too expensive for poorer countries to afford food. This is ultimately one of the biggest causes of starvation. People are not able to afford food, or are not in an area that has easy access to food. Adding to the problem of the paramaters for trade in the agricultural industry that make it more expensive for people producing food to participate in trade, the big businesses holding a monopoly on international trade can offer whatever price for their product they deem necessary - and often these prices are high.

Illustrating the flexibility businesses have in setting these prices, if one travels to a grocery store, then to a distribution center, one can see that the prices differs greatly. A bag of potatoes is available in a distribution center for one-eigth of one-half of the price of the same bag at a grocery store. This discrepancy reveals that businesses have a substantial degree of control over prices to offer more affordable food. Although?I am not saying that, as a result of this revelation, we should call for a worldwide price cut in food, I am saying that we need to open up the doors for all businesses alike to be able to offer more affordable food.

If small businesses and farmers were encouraged to participate in this globalized economy, their addition to the economy would remove the monopolized pricing structure of international agriculture trade.?Some large businesses might argue that this would not be fair, because there would be hundreds of companies under-cutting their prices. But, in a globalized economy, we need to create a systemic approach to trade between countries that allows for growth and development. The first priority for anyone producing food should be making sure that everyone has access to it; only if they do could prices be subjected to businesses' desire for profit. But the life of an individual outweighs the benefit of making more profits than needed.

So, big business might not support this change, but they must consider that if the market were to be open to smaller business, there would be a greater likelihood that people that ordinarily have difficulty in attaining food for their families will benefit. Because food from big businesses is often channeled through large retail stores, areas in which these do not exist or where access to food is limited need their own suppliers of food - this is where small businesses can come in. Approximately 1.2 billion people around the world suffer from hunger, and can be fed by small businesses who will not overlook this crucial sector of the market.

Creating a dual system of international trade cannot hurt. The shortage of food and the inefficiencies of production can be alleviated by adding small businesses and farmers directly connected with the development of food, rather than big businesses removed from production, to the system of trade. Food is a basic necessity of life. To alter the globalized approach to food trade, we need to enforce a true system of "give and take," in which everyone can contribute to alleviating starvation. Food is a necessity, and it can only become a commodity when the basic necessity has been fulfilled - profit should not drive the motive for trade until food becomes a commodity. We need to first offer opportunities for small businesses and farmers to?bridge the gap between starvation and food affordability.

Two Words for Every Bad Date I Ever Had - Huffington Post

I'm not sure if it was the warm Hawaiian breezes, the sparking ocean or the doorman who mysteriously knew my name, but the moment I arrived at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, I knew I'd never quite be the same.

Shortly into my stay, I met Clifford Nae'ole, the resort's Hawaiian cultural advisor and a gentleman who seems to carry generations of wisdom in every word he speaks. He told me about a spiritual exercise entitled "Hiuwai and E ala e," where he meets with people in the pre-dawn hours at the beach. There, participants reflect upon negative actions from the past that may be affecting their well-being today. The purpose of this exercise is to recognize those actions and then to wash them away into the ocean, freeing you to move clearly into the new day.

I love the idea of this process, especially as it relates to dating. Like many online daters, I've indulged in the negativities of my own experiences. I admit I did my fair share of regaling friends and family with my horror stories often becoming the "single girl floor show" at parties. As I sat on the beach in Maui, watching the sun rise in the sky, I realized the most important thing a woman can possibly know about dating: Each bad date is a gift.

I thought back to the "player" I went out with, the man who was so smooth and suggestive that he couldn't have made his end goal more obvious. At the time, I loathed what he stood for, but now I realize that he taught me the importance of choosing to date men who were looking for true commitment. Then there was the man I dated who was just like me in every way -- same education, same interests, similar job. I went out with him several times, thinking everything was just too perfect on paper. Honestly, I hated the guy. Lesson learned: Don't date yourself. I thought about the MBAs and entrepreneurs who were so impressive with their chef dinners and extensive expense accounts. Each of them taught me that I admire drive, but I need more emotion than they can offer. I remembered the men I liked who didn't like me back and was reminded of my own vulnerability and how easy it is to be hurt. Most of all, I thought about the many men who are smart, talented and wonderful in a million ways, but with whom I just didn't "click." I realized that each one of them kept me going. Each one of them made me feel like there was hope of finding "the one" in the end. Throughout this process of dating, I met many people. Several became close friends, some are now dating friends of mine -- and one of them became the love of my life.

The day after that sunrise, I stood on a seaside bluff, encircled by a ring of flowers. There, my boyfriend knelt before me and asked me to marry him. It was the happiest, most meaningful moment of my life. When I said yes, it was with a confidence fueled by enough experience and history to know that this is truly "it." Without every disappointment, frustration and let down leading up to meeting him, I would not be the same. So as my own personal "Hiuwai and E ala e," I have just two words to say to every bad date I ever had: Thank you.

Simply put, a small business agrees to pay a specified amount to the publisher, or the merchant site, for each ad that entices a consumer to come to the small business site.
