I live in a fairly small city apartment, and don't have a lot of space for exercise equipment. That doesn't mean I'm content to sit behind a computer all day and waste away, so when I learned about the FitDesk, a combination exercise bike and laptop desk, I had to try one. A few months later, I'm in love with not just the idea, but the ability to spend some time exercising while catching up on email or playing a video game.
The inventor of the FitDesk was kind enough to send one over to us for testing, and after some assembly (the box comes with all of the components you'll need and very simple instructions, but you should still set aside an hour to put the whole thing together) I immediately hopped on, put the foam "desk" that slides onto the handlebars in place, and put my laptop on top of it to see if using it as an exercise bike and a desk was actually comfortable. As it turns out, it's very comfortable, and it's not difficult to reach the keys or type while you're sitting on the bike, pedaling away.
The FitDesk is minuscule for an exercise bike: when folded up it fits in a closet, and even when unfolded it only needs a couple of feet from front to back for clearance. It's the perfect exercise equipment for people who live in small spaces, or where storage is at a premium. As an exercise bike, the FitDesk is great, and exceeded my expectations of its size. You can toggle the resistance of the pedals with a simple dial, and connect the distance traveled/time elapsed/calories burned computer when you want it, or leave it off if you don't want the distraction.
The convenience of an exercise bike that fits in a small space doesn't come cheap, however. The FitDesk will set you back $229.99 direct from the manufacturer, but we think it's worth considering if you're in the market. The flexibility of a solid exercise bike?even without the desk?and the desk attachment that lets you work while you work out, is worth some coin. Once you have it, you really don't have an excuse for not working out.
